Today at noon, the games officially begin as the Pirates will play their annual Black & Gold instraquad game at McKechnie Field in Bradenton. The Pirates top two pitching prospects are scheduled to square off against each other as Tyler Glasnow will start opposite Jameson Taillon. Steven Brault, Chad Kuhl, John Holdzkom and Trevor Williams are also slated to pitch. Both lineups are loaded with prospects, but to me the most important thing about this game is that Taillon is healthy and hopefully on the comeback trail to Indianapolis and then PNC Park in the near future.
This game is the one that replaced the old rivalry when the Pirates would open spring training against Manatee Community College. I miss those golden days. When, as a Pirates fan, you cringed every March to hope the Bucs didn’t lose that meaningless game so it wouldn’t appear on every major media outlet with the headline that “the Bucs couldn’t beat a community college!”
Anyway, baseball is back today and it’ll be nice to see Taillon on a mound healthy again. The North Shore Nine will have a recap following the game.
