It was exactly the script the Pirates needed to avoid the sweep against the Padres. Gerrit Cole blanked the Padres through 6.0 innings of work with seven strikeouts and the bats broke out for eight runs in the 7th inning alone to smoke San Diego 11-1.
Cole turned in his best start of the season and someone on this pitching staff finally shut down the Padres offense this series. Cole only allowed four hits and walked zero in a stellar outing.
For the offense, it was more of the same with a great number of baserunners and the runs came this time. The Pirates recorded 11 hits, five walks and were able to turn that into 11 runs as well. Five players recorded two hits each including four doubles. Starling Marte, Gregory Polanco, Francisco Cervelli, Josh Harrison and John Jaso each had two hits. Jaso is now hitting a blistering .368 average and a .431 OBP. Jaso has been everything and then some for the Bucs at first base. Just a friendly update that Pedro Alvarez is hitting just .125/.282/.156. Just saying.
The Pirates leave California, but continue their west coast trip with three games in Arizona coming up this weekend.
