It’s time for the Atlanta Braves and that annoying, insensitive Tomahawk Chop. The Pirates played the Braves for a four-game series back in May and the Pirates took 3-out-of-4. This one will be a three-game series, but the Pirates need to start “stacking wins” as Mike Tomlin would say it. Game one is set for 7:10PM.
Pirates ACE Gerrit Cole will take the mound looking to build on his CG last time out against Seattle. Cole was brilliant, firing a CG with just four hits allowed, one run, walking none and striking out six batters all on 94 pitches. Not too shabby. Against this Braves lineup, we should expect more of the same for Cole. Though if he doesn’t go the distance again, we have a fresh bullpen available with a couple new arms in Felipe Rivero and Antonio Bastardo ready to go.
Braves will counter with RHP Mike Foltynewicz (say that five times fast), who owns a pedestrian 4.30 ERA and 4.87 FIP in 12 starts this season. He faced the Pirates on May 19 and they hit him for five earned runs on seven hits in just 3.o laboring innings of work. That outing matched his shortest outing of the season and we’ll see if the Pirates can do it again this time at the dump Turner Field.
The big news is Andrew McCutchen is not in the lineup tonight. He’s not injured, so they must want to sit him down for a bit and play Matt Joyce in the meantime. And Josh Harrison is not playing tonight either, which can only mean more Adam Frazier. Bout time. Less than two hours before first pitch and no lineup yet, but could be they’re waiting on the status of JHay. Just bench the guy and let Frazier play.
