Game 112: An Afternoon Rubber Match

It’s getaway day at PNC Park as the Pirates and Padres will wrap up their three-game series at 12:35PM. Today will be the rubber match with both teams each taking a game so far in the series.

Once again the Pirates have the edge in the pitching matchup as Pirates rookie Jameson Taillon will start this afternoon. Taillon will be making his 10th start of his career and he’s been effective this season with a 3.29 ERA (3.62 FIP) and a stellar 43-6 strikeout to walk ratio in 52 innings of work. The 24-year-old righthander does not walk many, but has served up seven home runs (compared to just six walks) even though three of those bombs were at Wrigley Field. He only allowed two home runs in 61+ innings at Triple-A Indy this season. This will be his first outing against the Padres in his career.

The Padres will run out another mediocre pitcher in this series in LHP Christian Friedrich. The southpaw has pitched sparingly over the last four seasons to the tune of a 5.47 career ERA (4.35 FIP). The former first round pick of the Rockies in 2008 was released this offseason and picked up by the Padres. He’s made 15 starts for San Diego with a 4.76 ERA and middle-of-the-road stats like a 7.0 K/9, 9.4 H/9 and a 3.9 BB/9. Nothing great. It’s another pitcher the Pirates should smoke, but this is the same offense that just got shut down last night by Edwin Jackson. Having Friedrich blow through the lineup this afternoon would be another punch to the gut. He has a 6.75 ERA in 6.2 innings total against the Buccos in his less than stellar career.

The Pirates are hitting about 50 points higher OPS against lefties and are 15-8 in games against a southpaw starter.
