At least it’s not Shark week. The Pirates face an old nemesis tonight when they take on the Giants in game two of this three-game series at 10:15PM in another #LateNightBUCN.
Giants starter Jeff Samardzija is not having a stellar season by any means, but all you need to know about him is one stat. He owns a 2.79 ERA (87IP/27ER) in 22 appearances against the Pirates that dates back to his time with the Cubs. The Pirates did, however, hit him back in Pittsburgh in late June with six earned runs off him in just 3.o innings of work. It was certainly refreshing seeing the Pirates smack Samardzija around. Let’s hope they repeat the performance tonight.
The Pirates will call on Jameson Taillon, who’s been more than effective since making his Major League debut in early June. Taillon owns a 2.85 ERA through 10 starts and even more impressive, he has only walked eight batters in 60 innings. This will be his first start against the Giants in his career. Taillon has really taken off as of late and has a 0.64 ERA in his last two starts, including 8.0 shutout innings last time against the Padres on August 11.
The Pirates are 60-56, won their last 7-out-of-10 and sit one game behind the Marlins and Cardinals for the second wildcard. With a win tonight or tomorrow afternoon against the Giants, they will have won their fourth straight series.
