Game 16: Avoid the Sweep

Save us, Gerrit Cole. Everyone went into this series saying the Pirates can easily sweep the Padres and now we’re sitting here with the Bucs getting swept a real possibility. That’s why they play the games.

The Pirates need to avoid the sweep tonight at Petco Park when Cole faces RHP James Shields in the Padres in the final game of their three-game series at 9:10PM.

The Padres didn’t score a run for the first three games of the season, but had no problem hitting home runs and scoring runs in the past two games against the Bucs. San Diego has scored 13 runs and hit four home runs so far this series. I thought Petco Park was a pitcher’s haven, what the hell is going on?

Nothing else needs to be said other than we need a win to avoid the sweep and then get the hell out of San Diego before any more damage can happen. The Pirates pitching staff leads the league in BB/9. That needs to change tonight when Cole takes the mound in his home state. He’s the ace and he needs to effectively play the role of the stopper tonight.

Pirates lineup:
Jaso 1B
Cutch CF
Freese 3B
Marte LF
Cervelli C
Polanco RF
Harrison 2B
Mercer SS
Cole P
