The Pirates bring all the momentum from this series into tonight for the third game of this four-game series at Colorado at 8:40PM. A win tonight would win them the series against the Rockies and give them a chance for a big sweep tomorrow afternoon before returning home.
Jon Niese gets the call after starting the season strong for the Buccos. Niese really isn’t the story tonight though. The Rockies lineup will get their runs. The story is the Pirates offense and what they will do next. Last night it was Cutch’s three home runs and another 12 hits and nine runs total from this offense. Tonight, they’ll be facing pitching prospect RHP Jon Gray who has struggled in his limited time in the Majors. Gray could be the next on a long list of Rockies pitching prospect that they failed to produce. He currently owns a 5.91 career ERA and while was a top prospect through the minors, his numbers honestly weren’t that impressive above Double-A.
This will be Gray’s 11th start of his ML career and only his second start this season. He faced the Pirates twice last season in his rookie year and didn’t make it out of the fifth inning either time. He owns an 8.00 ERA in 9.0 innings of work in those two starts in 2015. Here’s hoping we see more of the same from the Pirates against Gray and judging from what this offense has done lately, why not?
