Well the Pirates three probables for this series against the New York Mets of all TBA’s changed today in the form of Jameson Taillon. He’s back up from Triple-A Indy after making his ML debut last week at PNC Park in a 6-5 loss to the Mets. I hope Taillon has a good card to collect on some airline miles from this last week.
Taillon gets recalled after the news that Gerrit Cole will indeed hit the DL with a right triceps muscle strain. Bout time we get word one way or another. First it was Cole might be out a long time then it was not season ending, but a DL stint was likely then it was oh he’s just missing one start and now it’s a DL stint.
So Cole hits the DL and we get to see some more of Taillon’s curveball. It’ll be his first start and it’s going to happen at Citi Field in New York, but against the same lineup he faced last week in the Mets. Taillon tossed 6.0 innings, six hits, three runs, two walks and three strikeouts. He also gave up a home run to Ty Kelly. Let’s hope that sequel doesn’t happen tonight. Hell, it can’t. Kelly has been sent down after homering off of Taillon so he has that going for him.
The Pirates will face Jacob deGrom for the second time in a week and normally that would be a crushing sentence, but the Pirates scored three runs off him last Tuesday in game 2 of a doubleheader and handed him the loss. Let’s hope the bats can continue that this week as they look for their first victory since game 2 of that doubleheader last Tuesday. Yep that’s right. It’s been five straight losses since that doubleheader when Taillon pitched. Now the Bucs are calling on him to be the stopper.
Here’s the Pirates lineup tonight:
