The Pirates return to the Burgh tonight to continue their four-game home and home series with the Tigers in what could be a cluster fuck of traffic in the city. Pens host a playoff game tonight as well as Donald Trump and his Trumpsters are in town and the Pirates play on the North Shore. Good luck if you’re going to the game tonight…you probably want to arrive early. Unfortunately, this game will also not be on ROOT due to the Pens game and you’ll only be able to view it on MLB-TV if you’re out of the Pittsburgh viewing region.
It was supposed to be Liriano starting tonight, but he’s been scratched with right hamstring discomfort and that leads us to RYAN VOGELSONG. Do you know the last time Vogelsong started a game for the Pirates? How about 12 years ago in 2004. That’s honestly insane. It’s more shocking that he’s still pitching period considering he wasn’t exactly the most effective pitcher throughout his career, but making a start with the same team 12 years later is rare too.
Vogelsong made his first appearance with the Bucs this season in Cincinnati on Friday, allowing one run in 2.0 innings of work for the win.
The Tigers will roll with RHP Shane Greene on the mound, who also pitched out of the bullpen last week for Detroit for an 11th inning save against the Marlins on Opening Day. You may remember Greene from his performance last April when he mowed the Pirates down for eight shutout innings in what was his best start of 2015. That game gave him a zero ERA after two games and he finished the season with a 6.88 ERA so you can imagine how well the rest of his season went. Hopefully Greene doesn’t repeat his early 2015 performance against the Bucs tonight.
