In a game that looked like it would get away from the team again, the Pirates did enough to win. The team scored two runs on a single by Jose Osuna to tie the game with two outs in the ninth inning. A rebound game was in need after Tuesday’s disappointing loss and was accomplished in the 10th inning.
The Bucs bats came alive in the final two innings of the game as they scored a combined nine runs in the 9th and 10th innings. David Freese, Osuna and Jordy Mercer hit back-to back-to back homers to finish off the charge in the 10th and defeat the Braves 12-5. Adam Frazier started the scoring in the game with a three-run blast for his second home run of the year. Andrew McCutchen did not start but pinch hit in the 10th, singled and scored the game winning run on a Gift Ngoepe double.
Matt Kemp, Jace Peterson, Rio Ruiz and Danny Santana drove in the five runs for Atlanta with Peterson driving in two. The Braves scored four in the sixth off Trevor Williams and Juan Nicasio. The bats went cold after that and scored only one run the rest of the game. Josh Collmenter gave up all seven runs in the 10th while Felipe Rivero earned the win for the Pirates.
The two teams play the finale of the four-game series in Atlanta today at 12:10PM. Ivan Nova goes for the Bucs against fan favorite Bartolo Colón for the Braves.
