The Pirates dropped their third straight Grapefruit League game and second to the Phillies by the score of 4-2.
Jon Niese struggled again in his second spring outing as he allowed four runs in 3.0 innings of work. Hey, at least he’s consistent after allowing four runs last week. Niese allowed two hits and walked two, problem was all four of those batters scored, including a two-run bomb by Darin Ruf. I’m not going to push the panic on Niese’s two games so far. It’s spring training so let’s not lose it over a couple bad outings. Niese did have one of the Pirates four hits on the day.
As for the bats, the Pirates didn’t do much off of Phillies starter Adam Morgan, who tossed three scoreless innings. In fact, the Pirates didn’t do much offensively until they faced former Bucco Chris Leroux. Cole Figueroa ripped an RBI single for the Pirates first run in two days and Harold Ramirez had an RBI single as well off Leroux. Josh Bell had the only other hit for the Bucs this afternoon.
The Bucs return to Bradenton tomorrow afternoon to face the Red Sox at 1:05PM. Ryan Vogelsong will make the start for the Pirates.
