Pirates 12, Marlins 2

After being beaten into submission on Monday to the Cubs in a laugher, the Pirates had a laugher on their own in a 12-2 blowout victory over the Marlins in Miami.

Jordy Mercer started the festivities in the top of the first inning with a solo home run to give the Bucs a 1-0 lead. Then the flood gates burst open in the second inning when the Pirates put up an eight spot on Marlins lefty starter Adam Conley. Francisco Cervelli had the big hit of the inning with a three-run triple to left field to make it 8-0. Jose Osuna made it 9-0 with a RBI single to score Cervelli.

Jameson Taillon battled to get through five innings, but allowed just one run and picked up the victory. Every Pirates starter position player recorded at least one hit as the team knocked out 18 hits in the 12-2 victory. Osuna finished with four hits, Gift Ngoepe had three hits including a triple and walked twice. His first start at second base proved to be a solid one. Josh Harrison went 3-for-5, Andrew McCutchen had two hits and Cervelli had two hits and drove in three runs.

RHP Johnny Barbato made his Pirates debut and tossed two scoreless innings with no hits and one walk. He was picked up from the Yankees for a PTBNL or cash on April 17.

A weird note from this game was that Marlins reliever Jose Urena came in for Conley and allowed 12 hits, but just two runs in 4.1 innings. The last relief pitcher to give up 12 hits or more was Jake Westbrook in 2013. Westbrook gave up nine runs in that relief appearance. But the last time a RP gave up 12 or more hits, but only two runs was Frank Martin for the Cardinals in 1950. So a fun little note from tonight’s game.

The Pirates and Marlins will be back at it again Saturday night at 7:10. Ivan Nova starts for the Pirates opposite Dan Straily.
