The Pirates first five batters all reached and scored against Rays starter Jake Odorizzi on way to rout the Rays 13-8 to close Grapefruit League action in 2016. The Bucs finish spring 8-20-2.
Jaso singled to start the game, Cervelli walked, Freese drove in a run on a single, Morse followed it up with an RBI single of his own and Matt Joyce drilled Odorizzi’s offering off the scoreboard in left field for a three-run bomb to give the visiting Pirates a 5-0 lead. Cervelli didn’t let up in the 2nd inning with a solo home run, his second of spring and Sean Rodriguez continued the assault in the same inning with a grand slam, his first home run of the spring. S-Rod’s grand slam gave the Bucs a 10-1 lead and that was all they would need to raise it in their final spring training game.
It wasn’t the greatest day for the arms after the Pirates run explosion. Kyle Lobstein started and gave up two runs in 2.0 innings of work in arguably his worst start of the season. Ryan Vogelsong followed him up with an inning and a third of work with three runs (one earned). Mark Melancon continued his stellar spring with a scoreless frame. Melancon finishes spring with 7.0 shutout innings and no walks. Tony Watson gave up two runs on three hits and Neftali Feliz allowed one run in an inning.
The team now will head north to Indianapolis to play an exhibition game against the Reds at the site of their Triple-A team Victory Field. It’s not known whether the roster will be finalized later today or Saturday after the game with the Reds. While we wait the final decisions, you can close the book on spring training 2016 and get ready for Opening Day just three days away.
