Cole, who owned a 2.20 ERA at Wrigley for his career, threw 114 pitches to get through 6 innings today and earn the win. He gave up two earned runs while striking out five.

He would also hit an RBI single that drove in Andrew McCutchen in the 6th to tie the game at 2-2. Freese brought his 2017 average up to .440 while is OBP is at a league leading .576. Freese wasn’t the only one to get in on the scoring. Francisco Cervelli, who has been struggling at the plate so far, went 2 for 4 and scored Freese and Polanco with an RBI double in the 6th to seal the victory for the Pirates.
Kyle Hendricks continued his subpar season by lasting just 5 innings. He gave up six hits, two walks, and three earned runs while striking out just two. He would also throw a high pitch total to get through those five innings with 91 pitches thrown. Kyle Schwarber and Ben Zobrist made the game interesting when they each hit an RBI single in the 4th and then 5th innings to eventually give the Cubs the 2-1 lead. Nobody on the Cubs had more than one hit while Bryzzo combined for two hits in seven at bats and no RBI’s.
Tony Watson earned his third save of the season with his fifth scoreless inning this year. Though he hasn’t been particularly sharp this season, he has got the job done each and every outing. Wade LeBlanc had another solid outing throwing a clean 7th inning while Felipe Rivero threw a clean 8th. Rivero needed 29 pitches to complete it, but netted another strikeout and brought his season ERA down to a 1.29.
Pittsburgh will play its second game of this series tomorrow as Tyler Glasnow takes his new delivery against Jake Arrieta.
