RAISE IT! There is it, finally we can hoist the colours. Today, the Pittsburgh Pirates were able to squeak a win over the Tampa Bay Rays to a score of 4-3.
Juan Nicasio started the game, and once again looked pretty brilliant. In three innings he struck out three while putting just four base runners on. This type of consistency could possible earn him a surprising job in the rotation, which would enable Vogelsong to be part of the bullpen. Melancon also continued his hot spring by retiring all three batters in quick fashion. Overall, the pitching was pretty solid today. Newcomer, Trevor Williams, pitched a shaky outing but managed to put no runs on the board.
The hitting was ok again. Andrew McCutchen was able to take one out of the park, while Marte rose his average to .462 with a single. The story this spring has been the younger guys battling for a spot, which all once again produced. Alen Hanson lead off and drew two walks today and is looking like he’s ready to earn a spot on the club. Bad news for him though, the Pirates just announced a one year deal worth $3M to David Freese. The signing is a great addition and a nice insurance policy on Jung-Ho Kang and his injured leg.
Tomorrow the Pirates will take on the Detroit Tigers at Joker Merchant Stadium. The weather forecast for Lakeland is set to be 85° with mostly cloudy skies.
