The Pirates received a great all around game today. The bats showed up and the defense was good, especially Andrew McCutchen in both instances. The pitching, most importantly, stepped up. Chad Kuhl started and pitched very well. The team needed a bounce back game from a starting pitcher and Kuhl was able to provide it. The team needed this win and got it done in a 6-0 victory over the Reds to avoid the sweep.
Starling Marte went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and David Freese also collected three hits. Adam Frazier and Josh Bell both collected two hits and Bell hit a sac fly in the 7th. Freese and McCutchen both drove in two and Marte scored on an error. Chad Kuhl was brilliant going seven innings giving up four hits, zero runs, two walks, and recording six strikeouts. A.J. Schugel and Dovydas Neverauskas both pitched scoreless innings in relief.
The Reds, for the first time against the Pirates, struggled. Joey Votto, Adam Duvall, Tucker Barnhart, and Eugenio Suárez all collected a hit for Cincinnati. The bats struggled and the pitching was shaky. Seth Romero started and pitched six innings giving up eight hits, four runs, zero walks, and striking out three. Kevin Shackelford gave up two runs in relief.
