The Bucs took a needed bounce back game to get back on track in a 7-5 win in the series finale in Detroit. Not only did they do that, but they also gained a half game on the idle Cubs. The team played strong and beat up on rookie Drew VerHagen for six runs. Gerrit Cole started for the Pirates and executed his pitches very well.
Cole went eight innings, giving up three runs on six hits walking one and striking out seven. Josh Bell hit his 20th homer of the year, a two run shot, in the 3rd. Bell also connected on a sac fly in the first scoring Adam Frazier with one out. Frazier also doubled in Chris Stewart and Starling Marte in the 4th. Sean Rodriguez drove in two helped in part by a solo home run in the 8th. Gregory Polanco and Starling Marte both collected two hits.
VerHagen struggled going 3.2 innings giving up six runs on nine hits, walking one and recording one strikeout. Nick Castellanos hit a two run double in the 1st. Mikie Mahtook hit a solo home run in the 3rd. Also Victor Martinez and James McCann delivered RBI’s in the 9th off closer Felipe Rivero but were charged to Juan Nicasio who started out the inning with a four run leave.
