Immediately following the Pirates 1-1 tie with the Blue Jays in Montreal Friday night, the Pirates announced that Tyler Glasnow has made the rotation with Trevor Williams rounding out the bullpen. Rule 5 pick Tyler Webb will be waived and by rule, offered back to the Yankees.
Glasnow is the No. 8 prospect in all of baseball according to MLB Pipeline and while he had an up-and-down spring (5.65 ERA in 14.1 innings, 23 K’s), the Pirates have decided to give him the reins. The rotation will feature five righthanded pitchers:
Meanwhile the bullpen will look at follows:
I believe this bullpen has a chance to be very good and especially with Rivero dominating spring training with zero runs allowed in 10 innings with two hits, just one walk and 13 strikeouts. I can’t wait to see what he does this season after being acquired along with Taylor Hearn for Mark Melancon last July. The Pirates will roll with an unconventional four lefties.
The last order of business for the Pirates before Monday’s opener in Boston is to clear up the bench situation. Chris Stewart, John Jaso, David Freese, Adam Frazier are in and it’s left for the Pirates to announce which two make it: Phil Gosselin, Alen Hanson or Jose Osuna. I fully expect Gosselin and Hanson to round out the bench.
The Pirates play their last game of the spring Saturday afternoon in Montreal against the Blue Jays again with first pitch set for 1:07PM.
