Pirates – Reds

Here we are, just one day away from Opening Day at PNC Park. The Pirates are going to get their final day of work vs the Reds at Victory Field in Indianapolis. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:35.

In this exhibition matchup today, Wilfredo Boscan will start the game for the Pirates. It’s been a short but brutal spring for Boscan. In only 3.1 innings of work, he’s posted a 21.60 ERA. Luckily for the fans, this is not a pitcher the Pirates are depending on for the year. Boscan will head straight to the bullpen in Triple A Indianapolis immediately after this start.

Today’s lineup will mimick tomorrow’s opening day roster with the exception of Matt Joyce slotted in the DH role for obvious reasons. If you’ve been following us or paying attention to spring, this lineup shouldn’t come as any surprise. Here at the NSN, we are still a bit nervous seeing Freese bat third, but we’ll trust the system at this time and see how it plays out.

The Reds are in a full rebuild mode? I can’t quite make out what they’re trying to do there, but their roster is in shambles. Besides Votto, there is a ton of strikeout potential for the Pirates pitchers today. They’ll be throwing an old friend, Alfredo Simon, in his return to Cincinatti. After an impressive three year stretch with the Reds, he had a season he’d like to forget with the Tigers. With just 24 hours until the first meaningful game of 2016, this could be a good confidence builder as long as the Buccos play good ball.

Pirates lineup:

  1. Jaso 1B
  2. McCutchen CF
  3. Freese 3B
  4. Marte LF
  5. Cervelli C
  6. Polanco RF
  7. Harrison 2B
  8. Mercer SS
  9. Joyce DH
