Rays 5, Pirates 1

Will the Pirates ever win a Spring Training game again? The answer is most likely a yes, but it was not today as they lost to the Rays 5-1 at Port Charlotte.

Francisco Liriano cruised through two scoreless innings before allowing a two-run HR to Desmond Jennings. He finished with 3.0 innings, five hits, two runs, one walk and three strikeouts. Neftali Feliz had another solid performance with a scoreless inning, and Taillon made another step toward his recovery with 2.0 innings and one run allowed.

The Pirates couldn’t touch Rays starter Drew Smyly through three innings and really couldn’t touch much of anything today as they didn’t score a run until Michael Suchy belted a solo home run in the 8th inning for the Pirates lone run.

The offense only managed four hits all day as Matt Joyce, Jordy Mercer and Elias Diaz had the other hits for the Bucs.

The loss drops them to 2-7-1 in Grapefruit League action. They will get another at the Rays tomorrow afternoon in Bradenton with first pitch at 1:05PM.

In the “B” game with the Orioles in Sarasota this morning, Tyler Glasnow pitched a couple of innings. Well, sort of. One inning was called short with only two outs and the second inning went an extra batter even after three outs. Gotta love the ol’ “B” games.
