The Pirates season continues to be one that none of us hoped for on Opening Day. They have now dropped 8 of their last 10 games and fall to 1-8 against the Reds. Against Cincinnati and also the San Francisco Giants, two of the worst teams in baseball, the Pirates are now 2-13. The bullpen blew the game after David Freese tied it in the 6th inning. The Pirates need to figure out their problems fast.
The team did a poor job hitting. Josh Bell singled scoring Starling Marte and Freese drove him in all in the 6th inning. The players are frustrated and look very much so during and especially after the game with public comments. Gregory Polanco went 0-3 in his return from the DL. Andrew McCutchen had two hits. Joaquin Benoit gave up the winning run in the 7th in his Bucco debut. Trevor Williams started and pitched well going 5.1 innings giving up six hits, two runs, two walks, and striking out six. Felipe Rivero gave up a two run homer in the 9th as well.
The Reds just find a way to win against the Pirates. Jesse Winker hit the winning home run and Adam Duvall hit the two run homer in the 9th. Billy Hamilton collected a hit but not a stollen base. Tucker Barnhart drove in a run to go along with the three that were driven in by Duvall. Robert Stephenson started and went 5.2 innngs giving up two hits, one run, two walks, and four strikeouts. Michael Lorenzen recorded the win for Cincinnati.
The two teams are back at it again tomorrow at 7:05PM at PNC Park. Sal Romaro will start for the Reds opposing Chad Kuhl for Pittsburgh.
