Tigers 3, Pirates 0

Well, there you have it. Another day where the offense was left in the cages and the lineup was flat. Again, there is no need for a panic button. It’s still spring training. It’s still just March 12th. However, it’s annoying!

As mentioned in the preview, today was going to be a big day for Jeff Locke. Going against a very strong Tigers lineup, he looked very solid. Locke was mixing up his pitches and appeared to be locating them as well. He did give up two runs, but overall I think we can be happy with what he’s putting together this spring. In four innings, he allowed just two hits and a walk while he struck out five. Holdzkom looked solid in relief as well as O’Flaherty. It’s truly looking like the Buccos are going to have some tough decisions to make with their pitchers soon.

There isn’t a whole lot to mention with our lineup once again today. Morse had a hit and drew a walk today and Stewart collected two obvious singles. Pedro Florimon collected a hit as well and is batting .313 this spring. He has a solid chance making this team as he is out of options and playing the best baseball I’ve seen from him, EVER. Seeing Morse playing in the outfield and hitting well is a big step for Pittsburgh. With the addition of Freese, it’s likely Morse’s role will be diminished. However, with Goebbert and Rogers not doing much at the plate, Morse could find himself getting limited action at first and in right, along with a quality amount of pinch hit appearances.

Tomorrow, the Pirates will be in McKechnie to face off against the Tigers once again. Gerrit Cole will make his Grapefruit League debut and likely pitch just two innings.  As of now, it’s looking like there will be a 40% chance of showers with game temperature set to be a comfortable 79°. Make sure to pack a poncho if you’re not seated under the grandstand.
