Well it has now become official news. Johan Oviedo will have Tommy John Surgery and be out for all of 2024. Johan had a pretty successful season he was coming off of where he showed glimpses of being a real threat on the mound through his struggles of a full season’s worth of innings. This officially leaves the Pirates with only one pitcher you feel confident in their rotation and that is Mitch Keller.

As it is now very clear that the Pirates will need to add multiple pitchers to next season’s rotation, there has already been a handful who have signed to other teams. Names like Aaron Nola, Lance Lynn, Kyle Gibson, and Kenta Maeda have all signed this past week. What do these signings mean for the Pirates in their desire to compete?
