On Wednesday morning, the Pirates announced some minor tweaks to the starting times of home games for the 2024 MLB season. Last season the standard weekday evening start time was 6:35 P.M. for April, May, and September while the summer months saw a 7:05 P.M. start time. They have shifted that starting time to 6:40 P.M. for the entire season for 2024. The weekday early starts will be at 12:35 P.M. The lone exception to this will be the home opener on April 5th which will take place at 4:12 P.M.
Saturday home games will take place at 4:05 P.M. up until the All-Star Game break and then shift to 6:40 P.M. after the break. As with the weekday evening games, this will have one lone exception and that will be the August 17th game against the Seattle Mariners which will be a 1:05 P.M. start.
Finally, the Sunday games will be played at 1:35 P.M. None of these are huge changes. The weekday timing shifting to 6:40 P.M. for the entire season means that there will be a lot more games ending before 9:00 P.M. This is a good thing. I don’t see anything in these changes that I would consider bad.
Tomorrow is December 1st and that means that single-game tickets will be going on sale to the general public. I think the smartest thing that the organization could’ve done prior to ticket sales beginning would have been to make a significant free agent signing. As it stands right now, fans are waiting for any glimmer of hope that we can find. I know that I would be more inclined to order tickets tomorrow if I knew that the front office was busy trying to build something worth watching this season. That’s just my free advice for Bob Nutting and company on this lovely last day of November. You’re welcome.
