At the Winter Meetings on Tuesday evening, the lottery for draft positions in next year’s MLB Draft. The Pirates were positioned in the eighth spot before the lottery with a 3% chance of pulling the number one overall pick for the second straight year.
The Bucs ended up drawing the ninth position which is one spot behind where they were originally before the lottery. The Cleveland Guardians won the lottery with a 2.0% chance of taking the number one pick. They were in the spot right behind the Pirates. Here are the final results of the draft lottery:
The Reds ended up with the second pick and the Cardinals the seventh. They will be the only two NL Central teams drafting ahead of the Pirates. The Pirates had the number one overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft and they selected pitcher Paul Skenes.
