The Kansas City Royals have made a plethora of moves recently which created a 40-man roster crunch for them. It appears to free up some room the Pirates came in and acquired outfielder Edward Olivares. In return, Kansas City will receive prospect Deivis Nadal.

Olivares has hit for above league average over the past few years. He looks to be a toolsy player who has some speed and pop, but doesn’t do too much very well. Last year in 385 plate appearances he slashed .263/.317/.452 with 12 home runs and 11 stolen bases. He is a righty who has pull power as all 12 of his homers were hit to left field. His power looks to be contained about the same in PNC Park.

In a vacuum this looks like a fine trade. The Pirates add some outfield depth, who may become their 4th outfielder, while not giving much in return. Nadal is about to be a 22 year old prospect who hasn’t yet reached High-A ball. He hit .212/.344/.377 while playing in Bradenton last season.
