Major League Baseball announced their 5th annual All MLB Team Saturday night.
Now, I wasn’t expecting any Pirates to necessarily make this team. To be honest, I didn’t even know there was such a thing as the All MLB Team until about 10 minutes ago. But after looking at the names listed, I think a really good argument can be made that David Bednar should have been on this team.
Felix Bautista and Josh Hader were named to the 1st Team. I’m not going to complain too much on those two because both had absolutely outstanding seasons. But take a look at the 2nd Team.
We have an argument here. A good one. Devin Williams and Emmanuel Clase both had great seasons, but Bednar bests Clase in ERA, fWAR, and rWAR. Quite frankly, he beat him by quite a bit in all of those categories.
I won’t nitpick as much with Williams, despite Bednar having more saves and a higher fWAR. It’s hard to argue against Williams’ 1.53 ERA.
I, for one, am outraged that the Pirates’ closer and our native son was left off this prestigious list that I didn’t know existed and I demand answers.
Should Bednar have made this team? Should he have just missed the cut? Sound off in the comments.
UPDATE:
Now that I know Bednar was snubbed hundreds of thousands of dollars, I AM PISSED! For reference, $500k is the equivalent value of 20,000 cases of Iron City Beer.
