Stephen Nesbitt of The Athletic joins us today to discuss his latest piece that was released today in which he spoke to 20+ current and former Pirates people about the state of the Franchise. He discusses the $8 million upgrades to the Bradenton training facility, the lack of drafting and developing success, the relationship between Ke’Bryan Hayes and Jon Nunnally behind the scenes, and how the Pirates have potentially changed some of their ways with this newer regime.

The thing that gets me about Nutting is: What motivates him? Typically people own sports teams for a variety of reasons:

    1) Money — Teams are good investments. But Nutting has said publicly that he wants to leave the Pirates to his daughter and that he has no intention of selling.

    2) Love of sports — Some guys love getting dirty with athletes. I think about Mark Cuban and Jerry Jones… owners that want to be heavily involved in the team and want to be around the team. But Nutting is NEVER around. Even Kevin McClatchey was easy to find at the stadium. Nutting has never seemed like a passionate baseball guy.

    3) BMOC — Other owners love the juice ownership gives them. A platform in traditional and social media. Easy access to mayors and congressmen. Invitations to societal functions around town. There are only 30 owners of MLB teams. You’re a big deal if you’re one of them. But does Nutting do that? He never does interviews. Does anyone see him at Altius having dinner with the mayor or with some Heinz heiress?

I don’t get it. As a billionaire, there have to be better ways to earn yearly income than running a baseball franchise in a city where you’re vilified. What motivates this guy?
