The Pirates came from behind to beat the Braves by the score of 13-4. This was the Pirates first win of the spring bringing their record to 1-3, the Braves fell to 1-3 with the loss.
Marco Gonzales started the game for the Pirates and was far from impressive in the 1 and 2/3 innings he pitched. Over that spell he gave up 6 hits, 3 runs, walking one batter, hitting another and striking out two. The damage could have been worse had it not been for a dart to throw out a runner at the plate by Bryan Reynolds.
For the Braves starter Chris Sale threw two perfect innings against the Pirates, striking out four.
Pirates began the comeback in the 3rd inning when Ke’Bryan Hayes hit a massive 412-foot grand slam to tie the game. Not to be outdone, in the 5th Bryan Reynolds hit a 434-foot 2-run homerun to give the Pirates a 6-4 lead. Pirates added 7 more runs in the 6th inning off a pair of RBI singles, a pair of Sac Fly’s and back-to-back homeruns from Abrahan Guitierrez (418 ft.) and Jackson Glenn (415 ft.).
Luis Ortiz pitched two innings this afternoon, giving up one hit, walking one, striking out two and allowing one unearned run. The velocity on this 4-seam fastball as well as his sinker were up from last season’s average.
Tomorrow Quinn Priester takes the mound against the Detroit Tigers. First pitch will 1:05 at LECOM Park.
