Paul Skenes will make his much-anticipated Spring Debut today versus the Baltimore Orioles. He will go up against newly acquired Corbin Burnes, previously of the Milwaukee Brewers.
This game will also include starts from four of the last five 1st overall selections from the MLB draft. The biggest match-up there will be Skenes vs Jackson Holliday, who will be the first batter faced in the bottom of the first. The person catching that pitch, former 1:1 Henry Davis. Not to be outdone, the Orioles catcher will be another 1:1 Adley Rutschman.
Derek Shelton‘s lineup features a number of expected opening starters, as well as a few fighting for roster spots. The bottom four in the lineup are the ones to watch, Edward Olivares, Liover Peguero, Canaan Smith-Njigba and Nick Gonzales. There performances this spring will determine where they start the 2024 season.
After Skenes, the Pirates are expected to have the following pitching throw today. Bailey Falter, Thomas Harrington, Colin Selby, Anthony Solometo, Carmen Mlodzinski and Ryan Borucki.
