The Detroit Tigers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-5 this afternoon. The Pirates now sit at 6-8 in Spring Training.
Luis Ortiz started the game for Pittsburgh, striking out six batters but allowing three runs. Colin Holderman followed Ortiz, allowing three runs off a home run by former Brewer Keston Hiura. Aroldis Chapman and Ryan Borucki each provided scoreless outings, combining for five strikeouts in 2.1 innings. Paul Skenes was slated to pitch but was scratched due to illness.
Offensively, all five of the Pirates’ runs came via the long ball. Henry Davis continued his scorching hot spring, launching a solo home run in the 3rd inning. Canaan Smith-Njigba and Abrahan Gutierrez also launched solo shots, while Jake Lamb hit a two-run homer in the 1st inning.
The Pirates will return to LECOM Park tomorrow to take on the Philadelphia Phillies at 1:05. Quinn Priester is expected to be the starting pitcher.
