The Pirates fell to 7-11 on the Spring losing to the Blue Jays this afternoon 10-3. Chris Bassitt led the Blue Jays from the mound today, pitching five plus strong innings. He gave up two doubles, one homerun, one walk and struck out nine. Henry Davis and Jake Lamb were the Pirates to double off of an otherwise dominant Bassitt. Oneil Cruz added his 5th homerun of the Spring chasing Bassitt from the game. Roansy Contreras started the game for the Pirates, doing his best Dr. Contreras and Mr. Roansy impression. In the first 9 plate appearances against him his line was 2 Hits, 4 Runs, 4 Walks with a homerun allowed. His next eleven plate appearances against, 0 Hitts, 0 Runs, 2 Walks and 2 Strikeouts.
Hunter Stratton followed Contreras pitching one inning giving up 2 hits but allowing no runs. Ryder Ryan followed Stratton with a poor outing of his own. He walked two and gave up two hits, leading to the Jay’s 5th run.
Pirates added a run in the 7th. Jake Lamb walked, with Shalin Polanco coming on to pinch run for him. Gilberto Celestino then doubled and Alika Williams followed with an RBI groundout. Carmen Mlodzinski came in for the 7th and have an atypical bad outing. Mlodzinski went 2/3 and inning walking 2, giving up 3 hits and allowing 5 earned runs. Polanco had an RBI single in the top of the 8th to push across the Pirates 3rd and final run of the day.
The Pirates return to action tomorrow against the Baltimore Orioles. The game will be at 3:03 PM at LECOM Park in Bradenton FL. Marco Gonzales and Frayson Rodriguez are the expected starters.
