The Pirates continued their undefeated start to the season today, defeating the Marlins 9-3. Those nine runs came off a whopping sixteen hits, along with four walks.
In his major league debut, Jared Jones tallied his first win. He went 5.2 innings, striking out ten batters and allowing three earned runs. His stuff was electric, generating whiffs throughout the game. Jones came one strikeout shy of tying the record for a Pirate debut.
The Pirates’ bullpen combined for no earned runs in the final 3.1 innings. David Bednar made his season debut in the blowout, posting a scoreless 9th inning.
The Pirates’ first run came off an Edward Olivares single in the 3rd inning. In the next inning, Connor Joe and Ke’Bryan Hayes tallied RBIs. Two more runs came in the 5th inning, extending the lead to five. In the 7th inning, the Pirates put the game out of reach, scoring four runs. Bryan Reynolds produced a two-run double as part of the four-run inning.
The Pirates will take on the Marlins tomorrow at 1:40. Bailey Falter is slated to start, as the Pirates look for a sweep in the opening series. Trevor Rogers will start for the Marlins.
