The Pittsburgh Pirates fell 5-3 to the Nationals tonight in the Nations capital, The loss puts the Pirates at 5-1 on the season, giving them their first defeat.
Mitch Keller was once again not his most effective self from the mound. He gave up five runs, four earned, over 5.1 innings with eight hits two walks and five strikeouts. Hunter Stratton and James Fleming combined for 2.2 innings of two hit ball after Keller’s exits. However the once again dominant bullpen pen wasn’t enough as the offense scuffled.
The Pirates opened the scoring in the 2nd, a double by Jack Suwinski followed by walks to Andrew McCutchen and Rowdy Tellez loaded the bases with no outs. But a Henry Davis pop-out and a Jared Triolo strikeout left them with one out remaining. Michael A. Taylor answered once again with a two-out single scoring two. Though after that offensive out-put Washington was able to shut the Pirates down, allowing only two more hits the rest of the way. While one was a home run by Suwinski, it was not enough offense to keep the Pirates undefeated on the season.
The Pirates return to action tomorrow against the Nationals. The game will be at 4:05 PM at Nationals Park in Washington, DC. Martin Perez will pitch for the Pirates with Josiah Gray going for the Nationals.
