Jared Jones flashed his electric stuff early, striking out Gunnar Henderson and Adley Rutschman.
Henderson and Ryan O’Hearn both connected on solo home runs, but Jones was able to limit the damage to 2 runs over 6 innings.
Jones finished with 6 IP, 7K, 0BB, 2R/ER and generated 21 swings and misses. 63 of his 80 pitches were for strikes, a very good sign for someone who had control issues as a young prospect.
The Pirate offense was largely held in check by Grayson Rodriguez, with the exception of Oneil Cruz. Cruz collected three hits and drove in the Pirates first run on a towering home run to right field.
The Orioles added two more in the 7th on a single by Adley Rutschman and a double by Anthony Santander.
Jared Triolo homered in the bottom half of the seventh to chase Grayson Rodriguez cut the lead to two. However the Orioles got that run right back, as Cedric Mullins smacked a home run off of the foul pole in right making it 5-2 Orioles.
Craig Kimbrel worked a clean 9th inning, picking up the save. The Bucs fall to 6-2 and will be back in action tomorrow at 4:05p.m.
