The Pirates were able to get enough offensively to go with a Mitch Keller gem to win 4-1. Keller went the full game giving up just a solo homerun in the win. The Pirates were lead offensively by Edward Olivares who doubled and hit his first grand slam of his career carrying the Pirates offensively.
Mitch Keller pitched well tonight. With the help of some timely double plays, and a great relay to the plate he was clean through five innings. Offensively the Pirates got a single from Bryan Reynolds in the first but were unable to take advantage. In the second Edward Olivares led off with a double, after a pair of outs, a walk and a stolen base it was 2nd and 3rd with two outs. Michael A. Taylor struck out to end the threat. In the bottom of the 3rd, Andrew McCutchen walked and Bryan Reynolds doubled followed by a Ke’Bryan Hayes walk to load the bases with no outs. Connor Joe popped up and Pirates fan collectively though “Here we go again”. However, Edward Olivares with a swing of the bat hit his first career grand slam and put the Pirates up 4-0.
Moving into the 6th Keller appeared to be cruising before giving up a solo homerun that surprised even the TV announcers. Fortunately he was able to get through the rest of the inning without further issue. In the 7th Keller gave up a lead off double but was able to get a trio of consecutive groundouts to keep the game at 4-1. Keller was able to come back out for the 8th inning, which he was able to breeze through 1-2-3. To seal the deal he came back out one last time for the 9th inning. He started the 9th with a strikeout, followed by another strikeout and finishing with a fly out for the complete game.
The Pirates return to action tomorrow against the Angels. The game will be at 6:40 PM at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, PA. Quinn Priester will pitch for the Pirates with Patrick Sandoval going for the Angels.
