The Pirates fell to 17-20 on the year after a 9-0 beating by the Angels. The Pirates offense failed to show up managing only three hits against a very poor LA pitching staff. Singles from Andrew McCutchen and Edward Olivares with a Connor Joe double accounted for the Pirate offense.
It was the Kevin Pillar show at PNC Park tonight. In the 4th inning Pillar hit a three run homer to break opening the scoring. He added to that in the 5th when he added a RBI groundout. Logan O’Hoppe added an RBI single in the very next at bat to turn it into a 5-0 game. LA added another in the 6th off of a Nolan Schanuel RBI single. Pillar hit his second home run in the 7th, a solo shot to make it 7-0. The 8th inning was a near repeat of the 5th. Pillar and O’Hoppe each added another RBI to their nightly tally and putting the game out of reach at 9-0.
Quinn Priester gave up five runs, three earned, over 4.2 innings, walking two and striking out one. Roansy Contreras came in to pitch 2.1 innings giving up two earned runs striking out three and walking none. Josh Fleming pitched the 8th giving up the other two runs on the night and not looking overly sharp in the process. The sole bright spot for the Pirates pitching staff was Kyle Nicolas coming in to pitch a 1-2-3 ninth.
