Today the Pirates fell to 19-25 after a 10-2 beating by the Brewers in Milwaukee. Martin Perez was lit up for nine earned runs through five innings of work.
The Pirates threatened to score early in the game today. Andrew McCutchen led off with a single moving to second on a Bryan Reynolds ground out. However, he was stranded there after a fly out and a groundout. In the 2nd, Nick Gonzales singled with one out, after another out he moved to 3rd on a Joey Bart single, however a Michael A. Taylor groundout ended the threat. They finally broke through in the 3rd, back to back singles by McCutchen and Reynolds put runners at the corners with no outs. Connor Joe got a sac fly to score Cutch, however they could not score any more.
In the bottom of the 3rd the wheel fell off. Back to back single began the frame bring up William Contreras who smashed a 3-run homerun. Martin Perez was able to buckle down and strike out Willy Adames. However, a walk put a man on 1st which was followed by a Gary Sanchez homerun to push the score to 5-1. Luckily, Perez was able to get the next two outs to end the bleeding. Pirates were able to get two on with an out in the top of the 4th, but a strikeout and fly out ended any hope of clawing a run back immediately. In the 5th the Brewers added another run off of a Joey Ortiz homer. In the 6th, everything went off the rails.
A single by Owen Miler followed by a Jackson Chourio home run made it 9-1, chasing Perez from the game. Luis Ortiz came on allowing a double, a triple and a walk to three consecutive batters pushing the score to 10-1 and putting men on the corners with no outs. Another walked loaded the bases with no one out. Miraculously, a groundout and a pair of strikeouts ended the pain for the Pirates in the 6th. In the top of the 7th McCutchen hit his 5th home run of the season cutting the lead to 10-2.
Oritz pitched a clean 7th and Ryder Ryan pitched a clean 8th. The Pirate bats were unable to do anything else as they ended the game with the final of 10-2.
The Pirates will now move onto Chicago for a four-game series versus the Cubs.
