Ben Cherington made one subtraction from the Major League squad, sending Martin Perez to San Diego. In return the Pirates added Ronaldys Jimenez a 18 year old pitcher from the DSL league. He made 3 starts there this year pitching 6 innings giving up 1 earned run striking out 8 and walking 2.

Perez had joined the Pirates this past offseason in Free Agency from Texas. On the year Perez was 2-5 with a 5.20 ERA in 16 starts, he had struck out 63 and walked 32. His role in San Diego could be dependent on the injuries that have struck their pitching staff this year.

On the surface there is nothing wrong here, Pirates add a young player for a older more expensive player that was no longer needed.
