The Pittsburgh Pirates failed to sweep the ailing Mariners 10-3. Jake Woodford and Ryder Ryan have up the runs, 8 of which were earned in the loss. The Pirates only managed 5 hits in the afternoon aiding in the defeat.
The game did not start well for the Pirates. After an out Julio Rodriguez singled, this was followed by a Cal Raleigh two run home run giving the Mariners the early lead. The Mariners threatened to score more by Jake Woodford bared down and got out of the jam. Pirates went quickly and quietly in the bottom half. In the top of the 2nd, through a pouring rain, the Mariners got two on base. Woodford then got Victor Robles to a 0-2 count, before losing him pushing it 3-2 then allowing a 2 run triple to push the score to 4-0. Somehow, Woodford was then able to get three straight outs to leave the frame without further damage. Pirates again failed to do damage of their own, leaving it 4-0 going into the 3rd.
Woodford was much better in the 3rd, getting the Mariners 1-2-3 on 7 pitches. Pirates threatened in the bottom of the frame. Ji Hwan Bae singled, Jared Triolo walked but fly outs ended the threat. Josh Rojas then added a 5th run for the Mariners, with a near wall scraping home run to CF. This was followed by back to back singles, putting men at 1st and 2nd with no outs. Instead of getting a double play, Triolo skyed it into RF, allowing a run to score making it 6-0 and putting men on the corners. A pair of fly outs brought the inning to two outs, however the second was deep enough to make it 7-0. Oneil Cruz opened the bottom of the frame with a massive double off of the bottom of the centerfield wall. The Pirates then did well, to make sure he was unable to touch home plate, brining the game to the 5th.
Ryder Ryan came on to pitch the 5th. After a quick out Ryan served up a solo shot to Dominic Canzone making it 8-0 Mariners. Ryan got the next two, but things looked bleak down 8-0 going into the bottom 5th for the Pirates. They stayed that way as minus a Triolo walk, nothing happened offensively. Ryan threw a 1-2-3 frame. In the bottom of the 6th, Joey Bart hit a dart, giving the Pirates two runs to bring the score to 8-2. To ensure Pirates fans had no whimsical fantasies on how the game would end, Mariners took both runs back in the top of the 7th making it 10-2.
Bottom of the 7th and Top of the 8th went by without issues, or run, from either team. Pirates added a run in the bottom of the 8th. A double by Alika Williams and groundout and passed pall scored him from 3rd. However that was all the Pirates could muster. The ninth came and went fast for both squads mercifully ending the game for the Pirates.
The Pirates are back in action tomorrow evening in Arlington Texas against the Rangers. Luis Ortiz will be on the mound for the Pirates, the infamous TBD will throw for the Rangers.
