The Pirates’ trip to Coors Field turned into one of the most absurd games of the season — and not in a good way. After exploding for nine runs in the first inning, including Oneil Cruz’s second career grand slam and Andrew McCutchen’s 11th homer, Pittsburgh somehow managed to blow leads of 9-0, 12-4, and 15-6, ultimately falling 17-16 to the worst team in baseball.
Thomas Harrington struggled in relief, Dennis Santana imploded in the ninth, and the bullpen as a whole — outside of Kyle Nicolas — couldn’t hold back the Rockies. Even standout moments, like Cruz’s laser throw to cut down a runner at third, were overshadowed by the collapse.
It was the longest nine-inning game of the Pirates’ season and a microcosm of their post-trade deadline uncertainty.
