The Pittsburgh Pirates lost tonight to the Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 5-1. Jared Jones went 6.1 innings, give up two home runs (3 ER) and striking out 8. Jones started the outing with hits off back to back pitches, however a double play to Oneil Cruz and a fly out ended the early threat.
The damage started in the 4th when Alec Bohm hit one just out of the reach of a jumping Michael A. Taylor to take a 1-0 lead. Then in the 7th, a single and a strike out was followed by Brandon Marsh hitting a ball off the top of the wall in leftfield. After review the umpires determined it to be a homerun and Jones was changed from the game. Colin Holderman came in to try to clean up the inning. But a miscommunication in right centerfield allowed Nick Castellanos to get on via an error on Edward Olivares. This was followed by a Bryson Stott moon shot to right centerfield.
Offensively it was not a good night for the Pirates, the one bright spot was a hard hit single by Cruz and a pair of hits by Olivares. Henry Davis and Bryan Reynolds were the other Pirates to get hits, though they never really threatened. Until the ninth, when they were able to string together most of their hits (Including the second by Olivares and one by Michael A. Taylor). This lead to the only RBI of the night, struck by Jared Triolo. But it was too little to late and the Pirates fell without further damage done.
The Pirates return to action tomorrow against the Phillies. The game will be at 6:40 PM at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, PA. Bailey Falter will pitch for the Pirates with Cristopher Sanchez going for the Phillies.
