The Pirates made their first real move of the offseason—and it was big enough to trigger an emergency episode of North Shore Nine. Anthony and Jim broke down the surprise five-player trade that sent Johan Oviedo to Boston and brought top-100 outfield prospect Jhostynxon Garcia to Pittsburgh. They covered why Garcia’s power, athleticism, and years of control check major boxes the Pirates have lacked, while also digging into the red flags—swing-and-miss concerns, chase issues, and the risk that he profiles more like a volatile power bat than a sure everyday player.

They also explored what this means for Mitch Keller’s future, roster construction, and where the Pirates must go next.

Jesus Travieso might only be 5’10” and under 160 pounds, but he is consistently 97+ on his FB and touches 100 already. He’s got a short arm delivery, and his breaking balls project at at least Major League average already. Of course, projection can be tricky, but there’s a real diamond in the rough here for the Pirates.

If Jhostynxon can develop a two strike approach, he can be an every day regular sooner rather than later. Right now, the Red Sox had him as a platoon player against LHP.

This could end up being a winner for the Pirates if their development does what it is supposed to do. If the Pirates development fails, then they are going to get what they have consistently gotten, which is below average hitters. Frankly Nick Yorke can be a plus Major League hitter, but right now, he’s not. Why not? I put that on coaching and development.
