Pirates lose to the Mets 3-1 and fall to 11-7 on the year. The bullpen again failed to keep the Pirates ahead for the 2nd day of a row. This after a brilliant start again by Jared Jones who continues to put up video game numbers in his early career.
A Pitching dule is what greeted the fans who came out to Flushing tonight. Jared Jones and Jose Quintana went at it each going five innings. Jones had the better on the night giving up 1 hit walking none and striking out 7 Mets. Quintana walked 3 gave up 4 hits and struck out four. More importantly he let the first run of the game across the plate in the 5th. Alika Williams doubled with one out and one out later Bryan Reynolds singled him home to open the scoring.
The bullpens then began their duel. Reed Garrett pitched two innings for the Mets striking out six. Luis Ortiz went for the pirates, and managed 4 outs with 12 pitches. However a walk and a single put runners on the corners. However a double, a questionable balk (with Jose Hernandez pitching) and another double put the Mets ahead 3-1. The Pirates were unable to get the bats going in the 8th or 9th cementing the loss.
The Pirates return to action tomorrow against the Mets. The game will be at 1:10 PM at Citi Field in Flushing, NY. Bailey Falter will pitch for the Pirates with Luis Severino going for the Phillies.
