I can't lie.

I wasn't really ready to hop on and talk about a loss, to be honest.

Yeah, I was actually prepared to talk about how boring Montgomery is, how it's never a high wire act.

He just comes in.

He might give up a hit or a walk, but he just gets it done.

yeah he was due he was due for an off outing he's been lights out fantastic i'm not at all mad at him he had one every pitcher has several a year it's fine it's not

really worth getting mad about this team right now anyway yeah just i'm a little sadder about kate upton no longer being at baseball games that kind

of hits me hard so Yeah, not a great way.

And that's disappointing.

I think everyone would agree with that.

I guess I guess before we talk about the game, it was it was Justin Verlander's going away party.

And I could have sworn the headline was changed, but maybe it wasn't.

But, his last start.

And that was a cool moment on the mound there when Verlander came out.

His daughter got to go get him and give him a hug on the mound before he was taken out.

And that was really cool.

That was a cool thing to see.

Yeah, I've loved Verlander from the start.

I've been a big fan of his.

And then, like I said, he got my queen, Kate Upton.

I'm like, okay, he's the greatest guy ever.

No, he's been a great pitcher.

He's been fun to watch.

hats off to him i remember talking with a co-worker it's probably been five or six years where can verlander get to three hundred and it was just injuries and the stuff but

there probably won't be too many pictures that surpass the wind total that he has i think he's somewhere in the two fifties or something like that they're not going to be too many guys.

He's number eight all-time in strikeouts.

May get passed by Scherzer, who's just a few behind, five or six, I think, depending on what he does.

But, yeah, they handled it really, real nicely.

his daughter threw out the first pitch.

Like I said, she came and got him off the mound.

And he was greeted by his wife and son, before he went into the dugout.

The fans, of course, were going crazy for him.

He's such a good pitcher.

Yeah.

He deserved every bit of it, and I'm glad I got to see it.

Yeah, no, it was probably the coolest part of the game, to be honest.

I wouldn't say there's too much exciting from today's game to really get into, but seeing the end of a Hall of Fame pitcher, one of the best pitchers to ever pitch in this league, and more importantly, someone I've never hated because he's

never pitched for a team I despise.

Right.

He's been one of those guys that you could cheer from afar.

He's a non-pire, but he's...

he never pitched us out of the playoffs or, anything like that.

He, Tigers, Astros, who else did he pitch?

Freddie?

I, yeah, but that was, that was mostly it.

I think he may have went somewhere for a week or two, but yeah.

yeah, he's just been, he's just been really fun to watch.

I've enjoyed his career.

He's, always handled himself.

He, I think he said three no hitters or two, just an outstanding pitcher.

And again, we're not going to see starters like him too much more, right?

They're just not going to see him.

Yeah.

No.

i think we'll see more like verlander but like it's just there are very few and far between who will come out and be just as dominant for the sustained period of time that verlander was able to be like even for someone like scherzer i feel

like scherzer is a good comparison but i also feel like verlander held that like period of dominance for a much longer period of time yeah i agree

was more condensed greatness it was definite greatness and they've both been fun to watch but yeah and scherzer's just not

rare in this era right he's been rare from when did he come up in two thousand eight or something like that he was yeah what Konnor Griffin wasn't rare when he made his debut

and had something He was, he's been rare for this century, even in the nineties.

the guy has, he has been a horse in a game where they don't let you be a horse.

There are guys that could do it, but they don't really allow it.

So yeah.

And we'll, like you said, that we'll see some come along, but just the way the game is played now, it's going to be hard for somebody to get to two hundred and fifty wins.

Strikeouts might be there because, strikeouts are a bigger part of the game now.

Yeah.

But he's number eight all-time in strikeouts.

It's, he's in some pretty good company there.

Yeah.

Not many will touch him.

But, like, Jen's definitely a top-ten pitcher of all time.

probably very easily slots in there and just again it was cool it was one of those games where like i feel like he could have gone out and given up eight runs and like it still would have been a party

yeah and i was expecting i was expecting the pirates to run the score up on him because he hasn't been very good right he hasn't been good or healthy and

yeah i did too i thought oh the pirates are gonna put a damper on this but in a very piratey fashion they were striking out a lot and not yeah i couldn't believe it yeah the two homeruns were nice but yeah like i couldn't believe

how many times they struck out the verlander today yeah but really cool and then also a more important Pitcher, I think, left the mound for the last time tonight,

too.

And that was Kirby Yates.

I don't know if he's made an official announcement, but that certainly looked like a, this is my last time I'm seeing a major league mound.

His wife sure seemed like it was his last game, right?

I do need you to clarify something for me.

We acquired Kirby Yates at the trade deadline, right?

Yeah.

Yes, because he was getting the fanfare.

I don't know if John Candelaria got as much fanfare for his Hall of Fame induction.

I was like, we were treating Kirby Yates similar to the treatment that Verlander was getting there.

And it's like, all right, he's been here for, two months.

He was on the disabled list for some of that.

But good for him.

He's had a really nice career.

If this is his last outing, it was a good outing.

Good for him.

Yeah, no.

And he struggled, but he managed to get through his out without giving up a run.

And so no, really, I'm glad he got a send off.

I was I was more confused that it happened at Comerica.

Like, I don't think he ever played for the Tigers.

And so I was just a little surprised, like he was also getting his fanfare on Justin Verlander's day.

Yeah, it was something.

He got his shine right on a day you didn't think there'd be any oxygen in the room.

And good for him.

Good for him.

He's had a long career.

He's been a good dude.

I would welcome him back in this bullpen next year with open arms if he wanted to come back.

So if he's going out on his own terms, I think that's all that most professional athletes want.

He went out healthy, went out effective, had a good year.

So good for him.

Yeah, one thing I'll say before we actually talk about the game, but it does make me things like because you mentioned his wife made it seem like it like obviously like really supportive of like Kirby, but like what does it must be to

be the wife of a journeyman reliever?

Where like you're almost guaranteed you're going to be in a new city every single year.

Yeah.

that's what I was thinking about.

Right.

It's got to be a tough one.

You're not, he's not getting thirty million dollars.

He made a nice living.

No doubt.

They're comfortable.

But again, you're like I said, you're jumping up moving.

you're getting to see a lot of cities.

So that's probably nice, right?

You get to experience some of the other, some of the great cities throughout our great nation.

And, he's, well, I don't know.

a relief pitcher can get a target on his back for most times there, especially like he's not been a closer much of it.

He's just been a setup guy, not a lot of focus.

They're probably not calling into the radio talk shows talking about kirby yates too often so he gets to fly under the radar and does it in a way that has to be nice for like he's like he can go to chipotle and

like not get recognized exactly right he can take his wife out to the movies and watch the whole movie without being bothered yeah shoot i get stopped by people so

Yeah.

But, very good.

You're here to Kirby a school to see to dream and one a bit more famous than the other.

Leave the sport probably for good.

But I guess the way we start this game has to be in the bottom of the ninth because again, the Pirates, I don't know, I felt pretty much in cruise control the entire time until that home run.

Yeah, until that because the Pirates loses for three, but enters and entered the ninth inning with Mason Montgomery coming in.

to close the game out up three one.

And I think, I don't think there's a single person in this comment section who thought this game was going to be a loss.

I certainly didn't.

I didn't, the thought didn't even enter my mind.

No, like I said, I was rehearsing my bit about, how smooth and effective and efficient that Montgomery's been.

I, that's what I was worried about.

Okay.

How do I, get my point across about how great Montgomery's been.

And you don't, then you see a, guy gets on, it's fine, but again, not worried.

Yeah.

Like I said, I wasn't worried until I heard the crack of that bat.

And then it's like, oh my, we've got a different show to do.

Yeah, it's just a whole shift away into like, no, it really sucks is I can't hit my wind, my wind prediction this year.

I predicted a three and they won't be able to get there now.

Yeah.

So that was a little sad.

But it also funny is like it just started off as a normal inning, like he strikes out Javy Báez is like Max Clark singles, but it wasn't a crazy like hit or anything like that.

And then, Hao-Yu Lee, who, full disclosure, I've never heard of until today.

Right there with him.

Right there with him.

Doubles him home, but again.

And I think he had Lee O-two at one point.

I think he had him down O-two.

Yeah, it'd be like, and it's three-one.

And then McGonigle scores him on a ground out.

So it's two outs.

Like, you've had your fun.

You've come back.

But Montgomery's clearly going to put this down.

And then Eduardo Valencia.

destroys a baseball left center field and wins the game for the tigers yeah and like yeah probably fitting for verlander's last game if like we're doing this from like a story perspective and

like the pirates aren't winning anything so like in terms of being mad about it like i really can't care that much but it's just like the pirates to put off eighty two wins, until like the possibility of eighty two wins until the very last game of the

season that like now there's something riding at tomorrow's game.

Nothing actually.

But again, a team that's finished over five hundred, I think, seven times since nineteen seventy nine.

It's something, right?

You might as well.

They got the bullpen game tomorrow.

So fitting of this Pirates team.

Lake Bachar starting.

I said another bullpen game.

I thought Jones is starting tomorrow, I thought.

I think I was listening at the end, and I think they said Lake Bachar.

And I think that's fine because it's actually a nice segue.

So, like, obviously Montgomery – first runs he's given up since july twenty six and i know that because dinardo said that to me about five bajillion times one of the post games we were on

but disappointing lost really a loss that you have no business losing and another again it is somewhat in the theme of blowing these late games that cost the pirates so many wins this season like even if you don't blow five of them

And you're at eighty six wins or whatever, like you.

Right.

It is.

You still could have had a terrible bullpen, but just not as terrible.

And you could be, vying for the playoffs now.

But yeah, we had like historically bad bullpen.

League worst bad.

Yeah.

I think only the Nationals were worse than us.

I think you're right.

Yeah, only the Nationals.

And but I don't blame them for trying to bubble wrap their important talent because there's also an incident where Oneil Cruz hurts himself, tried diving for a baseball today.

I forget what it was like the second or third inning.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Very early on.

And I was losing my mind here, Doug, because I could not believe for the life of me that they didn't immediately take him out.

That's I, they do this all the time.

Like a pitcher gets something and he pitches two more, and it's like, yeah, It's the second-to-last game of the year.

I don't care if he stubbed his toe.

what I'm saying?

Take no chances.

Yes.

Get him out of there.

Let Billy Cook get some run.

come on.

And then they compound it.

It's like, all right, we agree.

This is what we should have done.

We should have taken him out.

It's just – Oh my gosh.

I was, I was like not upset about the loss because the loss is whatever.

I was upset about that because I'm like, why are we doing this?

Get home, get Cruz out of the game.

He already missed two months this year.

He had the ankle injury.

Like he has an injury history.

Send him for the rest of the season.

I don't care.

He hit thirty stolen bases this year.

That's awesome.

That's great.

I love watching him play.

I want to see him healthy for twenty seven.

I don't need this.

These sixteen left innings are not.

don't matter.

I think so.

It was a second inning or something.

It's like, just set him, this is the time of year, that you play all the bench guys, there should be an outfield of Simon cook and, bring somebody up,

you bring up password or something.

it's, none of this matters.

The only thing you want to do is get out of this without any damage, any injury to anybody, somebody, his knee bends back in a, in a way that looks uncomfortable.

I would ensconce him in bubble wrap and get him into the clubhouse.

I would not send him back out there.

eventually they agreed with us.

They took him out and got Mangum in there, but I'm like, why are we even like, I think he took an at bat before he left the game.

So clearly something was up where he wasn't feeling good, but like, yeah.

I will say Don Kelly, like, just what are we doing here, man?

I try to defend him.

He makes it so hard.

And we'll get to that when we get to the Evan Sisk portion of this program.

But it's just like, man, Donnie Kelly, like, you're not doing yourself any favors.

no that was that was like the one obviously we could talk about the bolt-on usage but no protect your guys get ready for twenty seven you guys all dressed up like michael jackson for this road trip clearly

no one's taking this all that seriously like yeah well yeah and the problem is our owner and general manager don't take it seriously at all so all year long and yeah you

know eventually permeates down to on the field Yeah, well, we'll actually talk more about the offense and all that in the bullpen.

But those are the only two runs Verlander gives up to solo home runs.

Really good stuff from both those guys.

I'm just going to say this until I'm blue in the face.

But Brandon Lowe needs to be a pirate next year.

I will not accept it if he's not.

I don't care.

Go outbid everyone.

Yeah, I don't care what you have to do.

Well, first of all, you should be able to announce it tomorrow.

Take him off the market, right?

What's his name?

Ben Cherington is saying, oh, yeah, we've got plenty of time to talk about that in October.

No, you don't.

No, you don't.

Because smart teams have already reached out to his agent, right?

The teams that are interested, they're not waiting for the official start of free agency.

They realize that, it wouldn't matter, but this offseason may be shortened.

You want a guy like loud, good guy in the clubhouse, good guy in the community.

Oh yes.

And he hits thirty five home runs at ninety plus RBI and actually fielded his position quite well this year.

He has been so important to him.

He's the MVP of this team.

And you're going to let him walk.

And so you can replace him with Neil Gonzalez.

What am I saying?

Neil for everybody.

Nick Gonzales.

And I know Nick Gonzales may.

replicate what he did this year, it's not close to what Brandon Lowe did.

And I'm not sure that he will, that Nick will, right?

And he's clearly not the fielder.

He'll be better at second, I'm sure.

But either way, it leaves you a huge hole in your lineup.

And even when Brandon Lowe was struggling, when he was in his slumps or whatever, he was still a presence in the lineup, right?

They had to respect what he could do.

They had to pitch around him or be careful with him, that thing.

He was giving protection to guys like Reynolds and Cruz.

I think he was a big part of what they were, especially Reynolds' early season resurgence.

This team needs him.

They need him desperately.

They can afford him.

Affordability is not the issue.

They might tell you that it is, blah.

There are moves they could make to free up.

you've already freed up, twelve or thirteen million in Ozuna.

You're halfway to a year of signing, resigning Brandon Lowe.

So get it done.

Stop being the pirates and get it done.

Here's what I'll say.

Because I think we have to think about this in terms...

What the pirates are going to say if they don't resign him is that, well, he's older.

He's going to be, what, thirty-three, probably thirty-seven, thirty-six by the end of any contract you give him.

And...

based on the whiffs and previous health issues, there's a decent chance after the next two years, he's like non-functional and unable to play baseball on a regular basis or like play.

Well, I am fully ready to admit that I got such a distinct possibility and I'm here to say, I don't care because yeah, like you need to maximize the Paul Skenes window as much as possible.

I know he wasn't the best this year, but he was still a top twelve pitcher in terms of war and, Paul Skenes is the window.

And when you trade him, it's when the rebuild probably comes back.

It's time to rebuild again.

So if there's an aging Brandon Lowe who is not as good on big money on a bad team, I don't care.

Bring him back.

Get him for these next two years.

And maybe you're lucky.

Maybe he's good for three years.

But regardless, it is a risk the Pirates have to take.

It is a risk that the Pirates have to do or else – I'm sorry, Nick Gonzales is not going to – Nick Gonzales and Jacob Gonzalez cannot physically replicate what Brandon Lowe has done this year.

It's not going to happen.

other thing they're going to tell you is that right again we can we'll address third base with a band-aid till murph gray is here we'll slide gonzalez over to second and we've got rafael flores and Esmerlyn Valdez and connor i've said

this a couple times recently we don't know that they're going to do what they did we do know that brandon Lowe next year is going to hit thirty home runs we do know right and this

team It was part of the frustration of this year.

They're not very good very often.

When they get close to being good, they need to go all in, right?

you stop playing for twenty eight.

Stop playing for the thirty team.

Like you said, it's the Paul Skenes window.

Is that two more seasons?

There could be changes in the CBA that shortens his career in Pittsburgh.

Right.

So you're right.

All the chips need to go in.

And I don't think they would need to rebuild even after losing Skenes if they make a decent trade, right?

you might be able to do something there.

You've got some young guys.

Maybe they are for real.

But we know that Brandon Lowe is for real.

Have him be your opening day second baseman next year.

yeah like the team's not far off but like there's just and if you look at the third base market there's not a single soul who's going to come close to like whatever brandon Lowe is going to

do and i like murph gray he's not going to be brandon Lowe nope it's just we don't even know if he's going to be murph gray of the minor leagues right yeah i'm saying come on

But that said, bring back Brandon Lowe.

This is another great, again, really privileged to watch him play in our uniform.

I love him.

That said, we do have to get onto this bullpen because it was a bullpen game.

And what?

I would say the bullpen for the most part did its job.

Yates was good.

Yohan gets his hundredth strikeout of the year when he strikes out three of the four outs he got today.

So him and Montgomery have both hit one hundred strikeouts on the year, which is a pretty impressive feat.

Yohan, just an incredible season.

Two way to six era.

That might have been the last inning in the last outing he has this year.

Just incredible stuff.

It's been a great year for him.

Yeah.

Mlodzinski was Mlodzinski.

He gives up a run, but he does strike out five.

what?

I'm not upset by how Mlodzinski performed today.

I'm really not.

I don't want to spend too much time on him, but like, what?

Solid outing from Mlodzinski.

And then we get to Evan Sisk and Doug.

I want you to take the floor here.

Why?

Evan Sisk struggles a bit.

He can't pitch when he comes in with runners on base.

He's proven it time and time again.

This isn't, oh, it's a lefty versus lefty.

If there are runners on base, he's very ineffective.

What he classically does is allow the runs to score, but doesn't give up any of his own earned runs.

You look at his numbers, you're like, oh my goodness, Evan Sisk.

He's pitching great.

When the bullpen was really bad, where's Paul Oles?

I think he said he checked out.

I'd say, look at your pitch.

They should have brought in Evan Sisk.

Evan Sisk stinks.

He stinks with runners on base.

Maybe he's okay in other situations, but Donnie just keeps bringing them in.

I don't know.

Again, that could be a Ben Cherington mandate.

I never know who to blame.

But whoever makes this decision is an idiot and should be fired.

This is, he, again, he comes right in, lets the run score.

Gave it up a double to Javy Báez in twenty six.

It's also just a real feel bad story.

I hate him and he's terrible.

Like he's the last person I want to see.

He's very unlikable.

It was unlike.

it was so unlikable as a cub.

It's just unlikable.

Yeah, so yeah, it's funny you mentioned like they should be fired because Cherington did say today that Kelly is the man to lead the team going forward.

So Paul will be very disappointed in that.

Yeah, exactly.

But we knew, we knew that was coming.

They're not firing him would do nothing.

But anyway, but yeah, so, but I think the bullpen is, Sisk being your biggest complaint is probably pretty darn good.

Like Mlodzinski was good.

Yohan was good.

Yates was good.

Soto did his job.

Weaver was good.

Like, Until you get to your lights out closer, this bullpen hadn't a fantastic day.

Yeah, they weren't pitching well.

you can't, like I said, you can't.

Listen, there's nothing about today's game you can really be upset with other than letting Cruz stay in.

Right.

the move was to go to Montgomery in the ninth inning.

Right.

.

Yeah.

And he's been lights out.

He had an off day.

It happens when your bullpen only blows one game a month.

It's OK.

It's OK when they want.

But when they blow, ten in a month, that's a problem.

So, yeah,.

Like I said, I'm not mad at Montgomery at all.

Again, maybe, yeah, I think he pitched yesterday too.

I don't know.

He's been pitching a lot, so probably his last outing.

I'm sure it stinks to end the season that way for him, but, he should be very proud of himself for the year he's had.

Yeah.

No, it really does.

It's really not the way you want a season to end, but, like, again, he went almost two months ahead Actually, today, it was two months today.

It was exactly two months today.

August the twenty-fifth, or July the twenty-fifth.

Yeah, today's the twenty-sixth.

Yeah, it happens.

Bully on him.

Really can't get upset, and it sucks that you lose, but.

I think, as weird as it sounds, it's crazy to think about, like, have we gone around and around this season, how we feel very comfortable about the bullpen going into next year for the most part, and we feel very comfortable about the catching situation going into next year,

which I think is just, it's crazy to think about when we think about all this stuff.

Do we feel very comfortable about the catch?

I don't feel very comfortable with Henry Davis catching, so...

I'm not saying Henry Davis is what makes me feel comfortable.

Okay, I just wanted to clarify.

As a backup, I will say Henry Davis, two for three today.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Look, he could say that he got hits off Justin Verlander.

Yeah.

In five years of Verlander's being voted in and Henry's out of baseball, he could say, look, I hit that guy.

I won't do it.

Nick Gonzales's breakout has been fun to watch.

Awful in the field, but yeah, there's been a lot, a lot of positives, a lot of things to hope carry over to next year.
