The Brewers are headed to the World Series, and Alex Stumpf says Pittsburgh should be paying attention. Milwaukee has spent a decade winning without the financial advantages of baseball’s biggest markets, building a culture that develops, acquires and keeps winning players. The Pirates finally have a foundation worth building on. Now the question is whether they’ll actually double down instead of accepting another “lean year.”

Chapters
Key takeaways
1
Nutting saying a market like Pittsburgh will have 'some leaner years' is the wrong mentality. Milwaukee hasn't had a lean year in a decade.
Alex Stumpf
2
Money can make a difference, but it doesn't automatically win games. People win ballgames, and nobody assembles and deploys winning people like the Brewers.
Alex Stumpf
3
Travis Williams hasn't had a media availability since his 'postseason, period, full stop' line, and there were no significant personnel changes for missing that goal.
Alex Stumpf
4
This is the best Brewers team assembled in Alex's lifetime: they hit, field, run, have starting pitching, and deadly relievers.
Alex Stumpf
5
There's no reason it couldn't have been Pittsburgh going to the World Series. The foundation is here now, and Milwaukee doubled down on theirs by keeping Yelich and trading for Vaughn.
One of my favorite baseball articles from this past season was in The Athletic where Reds owner Bob Castanelli asked his GM, why aren't we the Brewers?
Alex Stumpf
It's a valid question and it was a great article because it was, the man looking in the mirror and not seeing his reflection.
Alex Stumpf
We're all trying to find the guy who did this.
Alex Stumpf
But it's also funny that it's the Reds.
Alex Stumpf
Because since I joined the beat in 2020 and Travis Williams was hired and Ben Cherington was hired, the Reds have completed a rebuild and made the postseason.
Alex Stumpf
They crashed out spectacularly and lost 100 games and then rebuilt to make the postseason again.
Alex Stumpf
While the Pirates' high watermark has been 82-80.
Alex Stumpf
So I want to steal that question.
Alex Stumpf
Why aren't the Pirates' the Brewers?
Alex Stumpf
Good morning and welcome to OffBeat here on North Shore Nine presented by FanDuel.
Alex Stumpf
My name is Alex Stumpf and this is a daily look at your Pittsburgh Pirates.
Alex Stumpf
The Brewers are going to the World Series.
Alex Stumpf
A pretty dominating sweep of the defending champions was completed on Thursday night.
Alex Stumpf
And how rare is it that the defending champs get swept away?
Alex Stumpf
Well, it hasn't happened since 2005 whenever the Red Sox were swept in the ALDS.
Alex Stumpf
But that was a five-game series.
Alex Stumpf
Last time it was a seven-game series was the 1990 Oakland A's.
Alex Stumpf
The other teams that have been swept away in a seven-game series defending champions, the 66 Dodgers, 63 Yankees, and 1914 Philadelphia Athletics.
Alex Stumpf
And now the 2026 Dodgers that were supposed to ruin baseball were just absolutely obliterated by the team in baseball's smallest market.
Alex Stumpf
And it's a great story.
Alex Stumpf
It is a great story.
Alex Stumpf
It's going to be presented as a miracle.
Alex Stumpf
And it is the furthest thing from a miracle.
Alex Stumpf
Over the last 10 years, the Brewers have won 866 ballgames.
Alex Stumpf
The only teams with more are the Dodgers, the Astros, and the Yankees.
Alex Stumpf
And I think if you were to be asked who were the teams of the last decade who defined the game, you would say the Dodgers, the Astros, and the Yankees are always going to be in the mix.
Alex Stumpf
And then it's the Brewers.
Alex Stumpf
Hanging around in that stratosphere.
Alex Stumpf
As the highest of epsilon teams.
Alex Stumpf
Back on opening day for the home opener, I got a one-on-one interview with Bob Nutting.
Alex Stumpf
And I asked him, in the middle of the conversation, he brought up the core that he was built.
Alex Stumpf
And I asked him, this could be read on Book Rule Bucks.
Alex Stumpf
I asked him, quote, You mentioned the core you have here.
Alex Stumpf
Paul, skeins, is obviously a part of that.
Alex Stumpf
Connor, Griffin, being called up, being a part of that.
Alex Stumpf
Did that heighten the urgency to make a run in 2026?
Alex Stumpf
Nutting responded, quote, In a market like Pittsburgh, we're going to have some leaner years, and we're going to have some good years.
Alex Stumpf
We need to capitalize, as we did in 13, 14, 15.
Alex Stumpf
We need to build on strength.
Alex Stumpf
We need to build on the foundation and really double down.
Alex Stumpf
And I believe that's what you're seeing this year.
And then he followed up, quote, again, There's so much strength that we've been able to build over the last couple years.
Alex Stumpf
I think it's coming together, and I'm excited by it.
Alex Stumpf
End quote.
Alex Stumpf
Next question, I brought up the Travis Williams period full stop.
Alex Stumpf
And Bob Nutting said, quote, I think we need to start every season with an expectation of playing in the postseason.
Alex Stumpf
I think we need to start every day with the expectation that we're going to win that game.
Alex Stumpf
This year, I really do think we have a realistic opportunity to have a solid, good team that can make it into the postseason, make it through the postseason.
Alex Stumpf
Be continued on.
Alex Stumpf
But that was the gist of the quote there.
Alex Stumpf
And those are two very different answers, in my opinion.
Alex Stumpf
The second one is the right answer.
Alex Stumpf
We need to start every season with the expectation of playing in the postseason.
Alex Stumpf
Yes.
Alex Stumpf
The first one, where he says that there are going to be, quote, some leaner years.
Alex Stumpf
End quote.
Alex Stumpf
That's the wrong mentality.
Alex Stumpf
When has been Milwaukee's lean years this last decade?
Alex Stumpf
A decade is a legitimate long run.
Alex Stumpf
When have the Brewers' lean years been?
Alex Stumpf
There have been years where they have maybe not been the best team in baseball, even though they have three times had the number one seed in the National League going into the postseason.
Alex Stumpf
But every year, they've gone in.
Alex Stumpf
And if you didn't at least look at them and think, they've got a shot.
Alex Stumpf
They could play in October.
Alex Stumpf
They're going to be pesky, if nothing else.
Alex Stumpf
There are no lean years in Milwaukee.
Alex Stumpf
And I talked about that the night the Brewers clinched a division at PNC Park.
Alex Stumpf
I talked about my trip to the NLDS last year, covering them and the culture that they built and the buy-in that they have with their players.
Alex Stumpf
There is no organization in baseball that is better at developing, scouting, acquiring, and coaching great baseball people and players.
Alex Stumpf
And great baseball people and players do great things on a baseball field.
Alex Stumpf
You want to have a winning culture, you have winning people.
Alex Stumpf
And the Brewers do that better than anyone.
Alex Stumpf
And they've done it all with the restriction of being in baseball's smallest market.
Alex Stumpf
Yes, their payroll was a little higher than the Pirates' this year.
Alex Stumpf
The Guardians and Rays' payroll was a little lower than the Pirates' this year.
Alex Stumpf
We can talk about what a potential salary cap could do for competitive balance.
Alex Stumpf
And I'm not going to say a lie.
Alex Stumpf
I'm not going to BS you guys here and say that money doesn't mean nothing.
Alex Stumpf
It can make a difference.
Alex Stumpf
It can make a difference.
Alex Stumpf
But it does not automatically win you baseball games.
Alex Stumpf
If it did, the Brewers would not have been the best team in baseball all season.
Alex Stumpf
If it did, the Dodgers wouldn't have been absolutely whipped by the Brewers.
Alex Stumpf
It's people who win ballgames.
Alex Stumpf
And nobody does better at assembling and deploying winning people than the Milwaukee Brewers.
Alex Stumpf
We're going to take a quick break.
Alex Stumpf
I'd like to thank today's show's sponsor, Larine Co
Alex Stumpf
We all know nicotine pouches are popular.
Alex Stumpf
And part of it isn't so much the nicotine as it is the routine.
Alex Stumpf
Larine just launched a pouch that keeps the routine but leaves the nicotine out.
Alex Stumpf
Larine Co pouches swap out the nicotine and give you clean focus and support your enamel the whole time they're in.
Alex Stumpf
It works like the pouches you've seen before.
Alex Stumpf
Tuck one in and go about your day.
Alex Stumpf
Each pouch has a half cup of coffee's worth of caffeine plus L-theanine and alpha-GPC for a smooth, steady focus with no energy crash.
Alex Stumpf
And it gives your teeth daily enamel support in between brushings.
Alex Stumpf
It comes in mint, cinnamon, and mango.
Alex Stumpf
And it's nicotine-free always.
Alex Stumpf
It's doing something good for your teeth.
Alex Stumpf
And it gives you smooth energy and focus without those jitters.
Alex Stumpf
Every other pouch out there makes you pick between something that helps you focus and something that's actually good for your teeth.
Alex Stumpf
This is the only one designed to do both.
Alex Stumpf
And it comes from a brand that's leading the way at supporting your oral health.
Alex Stumpf
Give Larine a try right now.
Alex Stumpf
Right now, Larine Co is offering our listeners up to 50% off at buylarine.com slash northshore.
Alex Stumpf
That's buylarine, L-A-R-I-N-E dot com slash northshore for up to 50% off.
Alex Stumpf
The big quote in October of 2025 was the expectation was to make the playoffs, period, full stop, according to team president Travis Williams.
Alex Stumpf
Travis Williams has not had a media availability since, period, full stop.
Alex Stumpf
Or at least at the end of this season.
Alex Stumpf
So I don't know what the thoughts are of falling short of that goal, of how there are no significant changes to personnel for falling short on that goal, or no doubling down publicly on period, full stop.
Alex Stumpf
But it showed this Pirates team jumped 11 wins.
Alex Stumpf
That's a big leap for a team, especially to go from where they were to finishing with the winning season.
Alex Stumpf
That, on its own, was a big leap.
Alex Stumpf
It wasn't big enough, but it was a big leap.
Alex Stumpf
And it showed that you can't just declare, okay, guys, postseason this year.
Alex Stumpf
We're really feeling it this year.
Alex Stumpf
No.
Alex Stumpf
This is something that takes years to build, years to assemble.
Alex Stumpf
And whenever you do have it, you don't tear it down.
Alex Stumpf
You do everything you can to keep the wheels churning.
Alex Stumpf
That's why Milwaukee's going to the World Series here.
Alex Stumpf
It's a sheer numbers game, in my opinion.
Alex Stumpf
Three times they have had the best record in the National League the last 10 years.
Alex Stumpf
They have made the postseason, what has it been?
Alex Stumpf
Eight times?
Alex Stumpf
It is, you're just, they're just putting up shots.
Alex Stumpf
The playoffs are a bit of a crapshoot.
Alex Stumpf
So what do they do?
Alex Stumpf
They get to the postseason.
Alex Stumpf
And they're like, all right, let's see what happens.
Alex Stumpf
And this year is the perfect storm.
Alex Stumpf
This year is the best team they have assembled, at least in my lifetime.
Alex Stumpf
I can't speak for the 82 team.
Alex Stumpf
This is the best Brewers team I have seen assembled.
Alex Stumpf
They can hit.
Alex Stumpf
They field.
Alex Stumpf
They run.
Alex Stumpf
They have starting pitching.
Alex Stumpf
Their relievers are just deadly.
Alex Stumpf
This is a complete ball club.
Alex Stumpf
And they're doing it in a way that Major League Baseball is going to say is impossible all winter.
Alex Stumpf
It's not.
Alex Stumpf
And there's no reason, as Bob Cassinelli asked in Cincinnati, why aren't we the Brewers?
Alex Stumpf
There's no reason why it couldn't have been Pittsburgh.
Alex Stumpf
This past decade, I cited the Brewers as having the fourth most wins.
Alex Stumpf
I want to make sure I get this order right.
Alex Stumpf
Yeah.
Alex Stumpf
The Rays have the sixth most and the Guardians have the seventh most.
Alex Stumpf
Those are two teams that consistently play in October.
Alex Stumpf
There aren't lean years.
Alex Stumpf
They are always putting up shots.
Alex Stumpf
It's a winning culture.
Alex Stumpf
It's being able to develop, deploy, to acquire good people, to coach good people.
Alex Stumpf
This is why the Brewers have advanced.
Alex Stumpf
And I see some foundation in Pittsburgh here now.
Alex Stumpf
I see some foundation in Pittsburgh here now.
Alex Stumpf
But I'm going back to Bob Nutting's quote about really doubling down whenever you have the foundation.
Alex Stumpf
Let's see.
Alex Stumpf
Milwaukee has.
Alex Stumpf
They kept Christian Yelich.
Alex Stumpf
They saw Andrew Vaughn, who wasn't exactly free.
Alex Stumpf
And they acquired him.
Alex Stumpf
And what a trade that was.
Alex Stumpf
There are some good homegrown people here.
Alex Stumpf
And yeah, they probably will trade Trevor McGill this winter because that's what they always do with their best pitcher who's entering his walk year.
Alex Stumpf
But they always replenish.
Alex Stumpf
They always have another guy.
Alex Stumpf
This is a team.
Alex Stumpf
This is an organization, actually.
Alex Stumpf
An organization that has the best culture in baseball.
Alex Stumpf
And now they have a pennant to show for it.
Alex Stumpf
It's not impossible.
Alex Stumpf
It's not impossible.
Alex Stumpf
It could happen in any city in baseball if it could happen in Milwaukee.
