Now that the 2026 Pirates season is over, we went back through the roster one last time and ranked everybody from S tier to F tier. Some were easy. Brandon Lowe and Oneil Cruz ended up right where you’d expect. Others got a little weird. Rafael Flores Jr., Mason Montgomery and Yohan Ramirez all landed in S tier while Paul Skenes fell to C based largely on the expectations he entered the year with. See our full final rankings and let us know where we got it wrong.

Chapters
Key takeaways
1
Rafael Flores Jr. is S tier. Nobody wanted him up after a rough year in AAA, and he arguably had the best hitting season by a Pirates catcher since Russell Martin. He's the No. 1 catcher for next year.
2
Brandon Lowe was the team MVP, and this was the best second-base season in a Pirates uniform in my lifetime. Better than Freddy Sanchez, and it's not close.
3
Oneil Cruz belongs in S tier: a 20-30 season in 97 games, hitting .280 a year after hitting .200, and the team was 20 games over .500 when he started.
4
Paul Skenes is C tier on expectations alone. A 3.82 ERA a year after the Cy Young isn't it, even if he was still top 15 in the league in WAR.
5
Yohan Ramírez is an easy S tier: 100 strikeouts and 80 innings of sub-3.00 ERA from a guy the rebuilding Pirates cut twice. He ends up three tiers above Skenes.
So in our first half rankings, we had Endy Rodríguez in the A tier category.
Endy Rodríguez would end his season on the injured list.
But overall, Endy Rodríguez put up a two sixty seven average seven homers, twenty RBI in the forty five games he did play this year.
second half sample size he only played in ten games before the injury where do we want to put Endy Rodríguez is he staying in a tier or do we move him down like just raw stats he's probably stays in a with
her expectations but i think in terms of like impact on the team you can only do so much in forty five games So I'd probably do low B high C just because he just wasn't around too
much, like.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Like there was never a point like when we were right or like make or break because of Endy Rodríguez.
But that said.
Hopeful about next year.
Very hopeful.
Yes.
I want to put him in, like where you're saying, low B, high C, just because his injury, it limited the catcher's room to only have Rafael Flores Jr.
And even though it was able to stay afloat, I think Endy Rodríguez, if he were to stay healthy, could have helped this team a lot more down the stretch.
Do we just want to put him in C for now?
Yeah.
And then we can readjust at the end.
yeah but also like it's also for someone like Endy, like yeah this is just who he is like he's made of glass that's my biggest gripe with Endy Rodríguez i love watching him play but it's like every year there's
like i think he had two injured list appearances this year two major stints and then this one he just had i think he's going to be out until around the all-star break next year if there is a next season And he missed like two years in the
minors, too.
Like, unfortunately, like it's really going to hurt.
He's got to get better and be more productive with his with his because he's good.
He's a valuable player.
He did show it at times this year, especially in the first half.
Moving on to a player that was picked first overall.
The only reason he's not enough for me is just because he has his defense is still really good.
Like him throwing out basically half of all runners that try to steal on him is obscene.
Like it's that's incredible rates.
So, like, that's awesome.
But I think he's going to continue to be Austin Hedges at the number one overall pick until the offense turns around.
I completely agree.
It's crazy.
He has went from number one overall pick to the backup catcher arc of his career because the next guy we are going to rank is a newcomer to the tier list.
He did not play at all in the first half.
It is Rafael Flores Jr., Who, Neil, he surged this year.
I was not a big fan of the trade.
a lot of people still aren't fans of the trade.
But Rafael Flores Jr., forty seven games all in the second half.
He hit two sixty four, a WRC plus of one hundred and thirty.
Eleven home runs, twenty five RBI.
Am I crazy with this?
I want to put him in this.
This guy was awesome.
are we a.
if we're just doing what he was like when he came up here, S is correct.
just considering expectations.
Yep, that's also part of this.
He wasn't good in AAA this year.
And no one expected anything.
No one even wanted him up on the Major League roster.
And for him to come in and basically hit arguably the best catching season we've had since Russell Martin,...
Yeah, that's an S for me.
He has seemed to cement himself as the number one catcher for next year.
And that is a story for this team, especially in this offseason, which especially coming into this past regular season, the catcher room was one where people were like, I don't think it's good enough.
Thirty five bombs, the most we've seen for a pirate in a very long time.
He shattered the second base record, which I'm pretty sure was twenty one by Neil Walker.
Yeah, I don't think that record gets broken anytime soon unless it's by Brandon Lowe if he somehow comes back.
This doesn't need much discussion.
I think he is your team MVP this year.
Anything else to add there on him?
Only thing I'll say is in the last video we did, I was hesitant to say this is a better season than Freddie Sanchez's season.
I'm going to double down on that.
This was the best second base season in my lifetime that I've seen in a Pirates uniform, and it's not close.
I think a lot of people can agree with that statement, especially me.
Nick Gonzales, very, like we said this last time, Nick Gonzales is one of those players that everyone seems to be obsessed with either horrible or he's great.
Pirates Twitter goes up in flames for everything the guy does.
We had him in B tier last time.
Overall this season, the story with Nick Gonzales was hitting over .300, which he did.
He hit .303, six home runs, 61 RBI.
games in the second half.
Nick Gonzales at two ninety six with a seven forty seven OPS and a one oh eight WRC plus.
his defense was atrocious.
It lost this team games.
but he still hit over three hundred.
I think I don't I did not expect Nick Gonzales to be all year in the batting title race.
I don't think that was on anyone's bingo card this year coming into the season.
We knew he could do it because of what he did in college at New Mexico State.
But in the org, that contact is just not really shown.
But this year it showed up last time.
Like I said, we had him in B tier.
Are we keeping him in B?
What are we?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, I'd be only reason to put him at the A is because this guy had zero expectations going into this year.
But I think with how bad the defense was, which isn't really his fault, but I think he's correct.
I agree with that.
And this next guy, I don't really want to read the stats for some of these guys.
Jared Triolo, last time we had him in D, when I was looking at his second half compared to his first half, it's practically the same numbers.
I'm fine with keeping him in D tier with Henry Davis.
That's fine.
We didn't get the second half crazy Triolo like we've seen in the past.
Only thing we got was when he saved that one game against the Giants.
Yeah, it was not great, and I wouldn't be surprised if he's not in the org next year.
he's one of those guys I think they could move on from if they have to.
That's something for the guys to talk about.
Yeah, he does have options, but if there's something to cut off the roster, he might be an option this offseason.
Yeah.
Konnor Griffin, another guy who had some injuries this year.
In the last tier list we did, Konnor Griffin, we had at a B tier.
He played in eighty total games this year.
He had two seventy two with a ninety eight WRC plus six home runs.
Thirty three RBI, twenty three stolen bases for a rookie.
I'm fine with keeping KG in B.
I think he had a solid rookie year.
You might say he did.
He did good.
I don't think it was the rookie of the year expectations a lot of people had.
The injuries hold him back for me, but I think it's a solid B tier.
I don't think it's A.
I think it's a solid B.
He hit the Bobby Witt benchmark, basically.
He looked very much like rookie Bobby Witt Jr., who he's even younger than when Bobby Witt was a rookie.
The only thing I would maybe say for A is that the Pirates just won so many more games when Konnor Griffin was playing baseball, but I think B is fair.
All right.
I think we keep them below O'Hearn.
Yeah, I agree.
But I'm fine with B for now.
I think that will be something people will argue in the comments because we did get some arguments in the comments last time.
Bryan Reynolds, interestingly enough, Neil, we had him as the first half MVP.
He was the top of the tier list ahead of Brandon Lowe, which after that June that he had, it was arguably should have been an all-star territory, just like Spencer Horwitz at that time.
But Horwitz is now a C-tier player.
Bryan Reynolds, overall this season, played in all one hundred sixty two games.
The Ironman of the team.
Seventeen home runs, seventy two RBI hit two sixty one with a one eighteen WRC plus.
The second half, though, is where Reynolds tailed off a bit.
He had two twenty nine in the second half with a six fifty nine OPS and an eighty one WRC plus.
He's going down from S.
But how far does Reynolds drop?
It's weird because not only was he unlucky, like all the batted balls data suggested he should have been hitting well into the second half.
I think it's really just that horrific August.
And I think it only really stands out because that's when the entire team cratered.
But when you look at the overall body of work and I still, I still think he's an, I think he was still one of our best players this year.
I want to put them in B because I feel like if Reynolds played like the June Reynolds in that second half, We might be still talking.
This video might be on delay still.
Because who knows if they're playing in the wild card right now.
Yeah.
There was a lot of frustrations in our Discord chat about Reynolds this year.
I want to put him in B.
I'm hearing you on A, but I want to put him in B.
I also think people just don't understand that Reynolds is not a superstar.
That is true.
He's just a good, solid player.
That's all he's ever been outside of one year.
But because we're the Pirates...
He needs to be the guy.
So I understand the frustration, but I think high B is fine.
I'll put him in highest B.
I think that's a good spot for him.
But it was a solid year for Reynolds, about the typical Bryan Reynolds year.
This next guy, though, also had some injuries this season.
Oneil Cruz, we had an A tier with the injury as well.
He comes back.
So overall, Oneil Cruz this season, ninety seven games.
He managed to get a twenty thirty twenty home runs, thirty stolen bases.
He had two eighty hot eighty points higher than the two hundred last year.
Oneil Cruz, since coming back, he had three fourteen and one hundred thirty six plate appearances, a nine twenty one OPS and a one hundred and fifty two WRC plus.
Oneil Cruz, people love to harp on the guy with the amount of time he played.
And you might be like, why do you put Griffin in B?
Well, Griffin didn't put up the numbers Oneil Cruz did when I say this.
Last time Valdez ranked S tier, one of the highest on the team.
I think it was third highest.
which was deserved.
Yes, it was deserved Esmerlyn Valdez in seventy two games hit two thirty two with a WRC plus of one hundred thirty seventeen home runs.
Forty seven RBI did get injured in the final month or so.
Really sucks to see there.
But in the second half, one hundred eighty two plate appearances, a seven eleven OPS hit one eighty four.
it wasn't as good in the second half WRC plus of ninety eight.
I thought the league slowly figured him out and the strikeouts were definitely a concern for Valdez with the expectation wise.
You could still argue.
Well, he blew expectations away.
anyone who came into this year saying that this guy was one hundred thirty WRC pluses.
So that alone should put him in a.
But honestly, if anything, show me what his what those stats you just read shows me what his floor is.
Even when he's striking out, he's still basically a league average hitter.
Yeah.
And he has that pop.
And we were excited about him.
I think he's an easy A.
There are there are flaws.
And, he got he got found out.
But I don't know how.
And I think he was way above everyone's expectation.
Yeah, so I'm fine with putting him in A tier for the expectations alone.
I'm sure people are going to comment, how's he in A tier?
He disappeared.
It's because of our expectations being absolutely shattered with Valdez.
I honestly didn't think Valdez was going to make the big leagues this year.
I think it was really aggressive.
And even though he did disappear at times, no pun intended for the magician thing, he still put up a really solid rookie season that I don't think a lot of people expect.
I could argue B tier where I would personally lean B tier, but since you gave me Bryan Reynolds and B, I'm going to, I'll let you have Valdez and a, I think that's fair.
I think either one's fine, but yeah, I'm more generous.
The forty five future value rookies who hit that well, even though we, even with a short with the cold stretch.
So next up, let's get through these last couple of bats really quick here.
Jake Mangum, he hit two seventy six with a WRC plus of ninety one.
He somehow I didn't expect him hit five home runs, but he did five home runs.
So the only reason I would even think about putting him in B is that he showed development, not walking guys.
Yeah.
But the numbers in the longevity and games never really improved.
And I'm sorry, you're a top ten prospect.
I needed to see more development this year.
Yeah, I'm excited to see what Bubba Chandler will definitely do in twenty twenty seven if there is baseball.
I'm excited to see what he works on because he did show some signs.
It was just some of those starts down the stretch, inflated that ERA a good bit.
He stays put at C tier.
Jared Jones just came off a historic and historic month.
It was like the second Pirates pitcher ever to do what?
He did this last month in September, but Jared Jones overall five and six coming off the injury where he missed all of last season, a three seventy two ERA in the second half, actually, because he also put up some good numbers
But also that is also the month of September helped him.
especially he had like the one era in september he looks like the jared jones many people thought they wanted to see it is the jared jones that this rotation needed where do we want to put jared jones last time he was a
a yep yeah just unreal season i don't care i don't care if he had to slip up he carried a perfect game or no hitter into the sixth inning three times yeah He had two separate months with sub two
yard, like almost sub one era baseball.
Just a ridiculous pitcher who, unlike Chandler, had huge jumps in development.
be i think he redeemed himself i think he was he was a solid reliever for this team made his money for seven million dollars i think that's a good investment i am fine with gregory soto there he had a three six three era struggled in the
first half but we'll say he went up in the second half mason montgomery this team has found a closer S tier.
I agree.
just he, until last, no, I'll put them there without giving up an ER, giving up an earned run.
We found our next big time closer.
He was a throw in for the, in the Brandon Lowe trade.
He was the highest because everyone else, I went back to the video before this.
I think everyone in that bullpen was D tier or lower.
Except for Yohan Ramirez.
I think he was also C-tier.
But D-tier or lower for everyone else in the bullpen.
We were starving for anything.
Evan Sisk ended the year with an overall 3.02 ERA.
But in the second half...
He only pitched his six, four, eight ERA because he only pitched eight and a third innings because he was up and down all season long, especially in the second half.
I'm dropping him all the way down to D or F. yeah, I wouldn't do that far because we had no expectations for him, but it wasn't good.
Where do we want to put him?
I'm putting him in your D.
I want to put him in D tier because I think of all the inherited runners that have came across in Evan Sisk's situations watching these games.
Saw some things I liked, but struggled too much to really say, yes, I want him in the bullpen next year.
But I think he has a future in the bullpen.
Yeah, I'll agree with that one.
I'll keep it simple there.
Khristian Curtis, we got to see the surprise debut in Cleveland.
I'm fine with C tier, C for Curtis.
I would go C or D.
He really struggled.
you could argue D.
I'll put him in low C for now.
I did not expect to see him this year at all.
I did not expect to see him start, and that first start was really special besides the bullpen collapse, which happened pre-trade deadline, but that's a story for another day.
But you could argue D.
Camilo Doval, you and I were on for the emergency podcast.
It was like the one emergency podcast we had before the big stuff.
Camilo Doval was DFA'd, so if you're wondering why he's on this list, it's because he was basically on the team until the final week of the year.
Camilo Doval with the Pittsburgh Pirates had a 3.79 ERA, but only pitched in the nineteen innings.
But it was just the walks.
The walks were horrible.
Twenty walks in that amount of time.
Yeah.
Actually, it was seven walks.
No, fourteen.
Read the wrong number.
Fourteen walks and nineteen innings.
Sorry about that.
Probably C. Yeah, probably low C.
It was about what I expected.
I want to put him in D because he was DFA'd.
Yeah, but was that more of a we're not tendering you when we want to see someone else next year DFA?
He ended up being the big splash at the trade deadline.
With the Pittsburgh Pirates, he would pitch in sixteen and a third innings because, of course, when he first got called up, well, brought in, it was during the start of the collapse.
So he never really got to pitch.
But he had a four nine six ERA with the Pirates.
And you see the poison ivy stuff come out.
He had like a zero ERA run with the Mets.
And then, of course, when he touches a black and yellow jersey, he also touched the poison ivy in Miami.
