The Pirates’ biggest offseason question is still the offense, but the pitching staff has holes of its own. Alex Stumpf looks at three realistic arms who could add versatility, give the bullpen another left-handed option and create more late-inning depth without requiring a headline move.
Watch the full episode or listen to OffBeat to hear which pitchers fit, why their traits play in Pittsburgh and where they could slot into the 2027 staff.

Key takeaways
1
Yarbrough being a fly-ball pitcher doesn't scare me at PNC Park. He allowed an 83.7 mph average exit velo and 25% hard-hit rate, and the notch will hold.
Alex Stumpf
2
Mason Montgomery can't be wasted on a random lefty in the 6th or 7th. With Gregory Soto a free agent, the Pirates need another lefty reliever.
Alex Stumpf
3
Brock Burke is a bang-for-your-buck lefty: a two-year deal with a premier bullpen role could land a 95-96 mph arm whose low profile keeps his price down.
Alex Stumpf
4
Enyel De Los Santos has more in him than a 4.79 ERA. Houston was a pitching disaster, and his changeup makes him the righty who gets lefties out that this bullpen lacks.
Alex Stumpf
5
Starting pitching isn't a huge need right now, but the Pirates listened on Jared Jones and traded Mike Burrows, so adding swing-man depth is the smart route.
Last week, I took a look at three hitters that I thought the Pirates should sign this winter.
Alex Stumpf
We don't know yet who their off-season targets are.
Alex Stumpf
They can't talk to other teams' free agents yet.
Alex Stumpf
But it was a good thought exercise.
Alex Stumpf
It was three guys who filled needs who the Pirates had been connected to in the past.
Alex Stumpf
They had traits that the Pirates liked.
Alex Stumpf
So let's see if they could impact the 2020-17.
Alex Stumpf
And I think this winter is going to be defined once again by the hitters they bring in.
Alex Stumpf
Whenever you maybe lose Brandon Lowe, whenever you still have some clear weaknesses like against left-handed starting pitching, it's going to be an important winter.
Alex Stumpf
The hitters they bring in are probably going to be the better indicator of how seriously they're taking 20-27.
Alex Stumpf
But the pitching staff could still use a shot in the arm.
Alex Stumpf
There are a couple areas where they could use some depth, use some upside.
Alex Stumpf
So let's do the same exercise, but on the pitching side.
Alex Stumpf
Here are three guys who I think would make the Pirates better.
Alex Stumpf
Good morning and welcome to OffBeat here on North Shore Nine presented by FanDuel.
Alex Stumpf
My name is Alex Stumpf and this is a daily look at your Pittsburgh Pirates.
Alex Stumpf
Whenever I look at this pitching staff, I see there's one clear weakness.
Alex Stumpf
And that's not having another lefty reliever.
Alex Stumpf
Mason Montgomery is going to pitch, the 8th inning, the 9th inning, either be the closer or split the role with Luke Weaver.
Alex Stumpf
You can't throw him out there against a random lefty in the 6th or the 7th inning.
Alex Stumpf
So they need a little help there, especially with Gregory Soto, a free agent at the end of this year.
Alex Stumpf
I, you could always use another, big arm in that bullpen.
Alex Stumpf
You can never have too many.
Alex Stumpf
And I'm also looking at starting pitching depth, even though I know it's murky right now.
Do the Pirates dare float some of their more enticing?
Alex Stumpf
I'm starting pitchers out if they want to make, a big splash trade.
Alex Stumpf
Like they were willing to listen for Jared Jones in the past.
Alex Stumpf
Now, don't get it misconstrued.
Alex Stumpf
The asking price was astronomical, but they were willing to listen.
Alex Stumpf
We saw last year they were willing to trade Mike Burroughs and they had a very high asking price for him and someone met it.
Alex Stumpf
So I'm looking at starting pitching is not a huge area of need at this given moment.
Alex Stumpf
But if you make a trade or if you just want to bolster the depth, I think this is a good route to go.
Alex Stumpf
The other lefty I have on the list, this one, a more traditional lefty reliever, is Brock Burke, who was picked off the waiver wire two years ago by America's team, the Los Angeles Angels.
Alex Stumpf
And then got flipped to Cincinnati this year, reunited, or I guess not reunited, but, got to link up with Oscar Marin, old friend of the Pirates pitching staff.
Alex Stumpf
And he really did well.
Alex Stumpf
193 batting average allowed on his fastball, 28.7 whiff rate in general.
Alex Stumpf
He gets really good extension, which we know the Pirates do value.
Alex Stumpf
And it all equated to a 230 ERA over 77 games, 74 and a third innings pitch, 74 strikeouts.
Alex Stumpf
Again, someone who gives up more fly balls than ideal, but I'm following the Ryan Yarbrough model here also.
Alex Stumpf
Of a right-handed hitter hitting a fly ball at PNC Park doesn't scare me as much.
Alex Stumpf
And there are some control issues.
Alex Stumpf
12.7% walk rate is high.
Alex Stumpf
No other way to slice it.
Alex Stumpf
But I see someone who has a really good fastball, who can generate some spin, who can attack from that, high arm angle.
Alex Stumpf
There's a lot I like about his game.
Alex Stumpf
And he doesn't give up a ton of hard contact.
Alex Stumpf
If he could get more chases, that'd be good.
Alex Stumpf
That'd be good.
Alex Stumpf
But here's someone who is 30 years old, has never really had a premier bullpen roll.
Alex Stumpf
But I think the Pirates could offer that.
Alex Stumpf
Opportunity is always going to be big for Pirates and free agents.
Alex Stumpf
Other teams are going to offer, larger contracts probably, but the Pirates always have that.
Alex Stumpf
Especially for these guys who are like 30, 31 years old.
Alex Stumpf
Like, hey, come here, build value, then go test free agency after.
Alex Stumpf
I think this is the type of guy who, if you offer, like, that two-year deal, you offer some certainty.
Alex Stumpf
But also that opportunity for him to get another bite at the apple later.
Alex Stumpf
It could be enticing.
Alex Stumpf
A lefty who throws 95, 96, doesn't give up a ton of hard contact.
Alex Stumpf
Yeah, you're going to deal with some control issues at times, but these type of guys are usually in higher demand.
Alex Stumpf
They're not guys who two years ago were on the waiver wire, who then toiled away in Los Angeles' second team and Cincinnati.
Alex Stumpf
There's not a high profile on this guy, and I do think that does impact free agent spending and money.
Alex Stumpf
I think he's a good bang for your buck type guy here.
Alex Stumpf
Before we get to number three, I'd like to thank today's sponsor, Larine Co.
Alex Stumpf
We all know nicotine pouches are popular, and part of it isn't so much the nicotine as it is the routine.
Alex Stumpf
Larine Co just launched a pouch that keeps the routine but leaves the nicotine out.
Alex Stumpf
Larine Co pouches swap out the nicotine and give you clean focus and support your enamel the whole time they're in.
Alex Stumpf
It works like the pouches you've seen before.
Alex Stumpf
Just tuck one in and go about your day.
Alex Stumpf
Each pouch has a half cup of coffee's worth of caffeine plus L-theanine and alpha-GPC for a smooth, steady focus with no energy crash, and it gives your teeth daily enamel support in between brushings.
Alex Stumpf
It comes in mint, cinnamon, and mango, and it's nicotine-free always.
Alex Stumpf
It's doing something good for your teeth, and it gives you smooth energy and focus without those jitters.
Alex Stumpf
Every other pouch out there makes you pick between something that helps you focus and something that's actually good for your teeth.
Alex Stumpf
Give Larine Co is offering our listeners up to 50% off at ByLoreen.com slash North Shore.
Alex Stumpf
That's ByLoreen, L-A-R-I-N-E dot com slash North Shore for up to 50% off.
Alex Stumpf
Third guy on my list is actually a reunion.
Alex Stumpf
If anyone remembers the 2021 Pittsburgh Pirates, they, towards the end of the year, claimed a reliever named Ennio De Los Santos, who was just part of that roster churn of just bring people in, try to cross the finish line for the year.
Alex Stumpf
Maybe they show something.
Alex Stumpf
He didn't last long.
Alex Stumpf
But then he had a nice little run in Cleveland, and then he went to Houston.
Alex Stumpf
And in Houston, man, everything went bad in Houston this year.
Alex Stumpf
479 ERA over 71 and a third innings.
Alex Stumpf
I don't know.
Alex Stumpf
I look at the stuff, and I look at the metrics, and I'm like, there's more here.
Alex Stumpf
There's more here.
Alex Stumpf
And big picture, one of the big things for me is the changeup.
Alex Stumpf
A pitch that gets dive.
Alex Stumpf
He's able to locate it consistently to that low hand side.
Alex Stumpf
It's a real weapon against left-handers.
Alex Stumpf
He'll throw it often.
Alex Stumpf
And this bullpen, I think, could use a righty who gets left-handers out.
Alex Stumpf
Luke Weaver didn't have a good run with it last year.
Alex Stumpf
Yohan Ramirez struggled throughout the year against left-handers.
Alex Stumpf
Lake Picard did well in his sample size here.
Alex Stumpf
But just in general, if you could get a righty who's not just more a right-on-right guy, can handle left-handers also, that is such a big boost for your bullpen.
Alex Stumpf
And I think Ennio De Los Santos could be that type of guy.
Alex Stumpf
And if you could bump up the changeup rate against right-handers too, I really like that pitch.
Alex Stumpf
I really like that pitch.
Alex Stumpf
37% whiff rate, 181 batting average against, gets the movement profile you want, is able to consistently locate it.
Alex Stumpf
I am buying a pitch in traits.
Alex Stumpf
Someone who still throws 95, who had above-average marks in average exit velo, chase rate, whiff rate, walk rate, barrel rate, hard hit rate.
Alex Stumpf
There's a lot.
Alex Stumpf
There's just too much smoke here for me.
Alex Stumpf
And I know it's not the most uncommon thing.
Alex Stumpf
You will find relievers who have a good savant page, who aren't actually that good.
Alex Stumpf
But I can't help but feel like this guy has more in him than a 479 ERA.
Alex Stumpf
Houston was a pitching disaster this year.
Alex Stumpf
I can't help but wonder if just leaving there is going to be a runoff as ERA as is.
Alex Stumpf
He and Bill Murphy had a little time to get to know each other in 2025.
Alex Stumpf
He was a deadline acquisition that season.
Alex Stumpf
So it's not starting from scratch, something that I think is going to be very beneficial this winter since coaches are not going to be able to be in contact with players during the lockout.
Alex Stumpf
They don't have to start from absolute scratch, absolute zero.
Alex Stumpf
There's a little shorthand already.
Alex Stumpf
And I see someone with a plus fastball, a plus changeup.
Alex Stumpf
I roll the dice there.
Alex Stumpf
I could offer him a leverage role.
Alex Stumpf
He could be the second setup man.
Alex Stumpf
If Mason Montgomery and Luke Weaver are tier one, we're offering you tier two.
Alex Stumpf
Someone who could get some saves, could get some eighth inning work, depending on how much the other two pitchers had thrown, if one of them's struggling.
Alex Stumpf
This is the type of move that I think could elevate the bullpen.
Alex Stumpf
And that whenever, how confident everyone was in Dennis Santana last year, whenever he went sideways, the whole bullpen, faltered.
Alex Stumpf
This is some depth.
Alex Stumpf
This is some upside, some unexplored upside that we haven't seen in a few years, but I think is there.
Alex Stumpf
I don't think he's going to cost a whole lot.
Alex Stumpf
I don't think he's looking for a multi-year deal.
Alex Stumpf
I definitely kick the tires and see if this bullpen could be an even bigger strength.
