The Pirates may have a difficult time replacing Brandon Lowe‘s production if he leaves this winter. That makes getting more consistency out of Bryan Reynolds even more important. Reynolds showed how dangerous he can be during stretches of 2026, but Pittsburgh needs that production to last an entire season. Alex Stumpf looks at why Reynolds could be the steady force this lineup needs in 2027.

Key takeaways
1
Offloading Bryan Reynolds' contract to afford Brandon Lowe is not happening; Reynolds will be a Pirate in 2027 barring something very unforeseen.
Alex Stumpf
2
Reynolds should have been an All-Star: 14 homers, 59 RBI, 7 steals and an 878 OPS in the first half, then just 3 homers and 13 RBI in 64 second-half games.
Alex Stumpf
3
The July swoon wasn't all on Reynolds (injuries, no bullpen adds until deadline day), but his second-half fall-off while hitting in the heart of the order is part of it.
Alex Stumpf
4
Esmerlyn Valdez is my Opening Day right fielder, even with his feast-or-famine months.
Alex Stumpf
5
Reynolds and O'Hearn are the only two hitters I know what to expect from in 2027; everyone else is a question mark, and the Pirates need Reynolds to be the consistent pacesetter Lowe was.
In a perfect world, the Pirates would be bringing back Brandon Lowe this winter.
Alex Stumpf
It just doesn't look that plausible.
Alex Stumpf
I've seen a lot of theories online of how the Pirates could move money around and how they could make it work somehow, some way.
Alex Stumpf
And one theory I saw recently was offload Bryan Reynolds' contract.
Alex Stumpf
Number one, let's just start off with the basics.
Alex Stumpf
That's not happening.
Alex Stumpf
Bryan Reynolds is going to be a Pirate in 2027, barring something very unforeseen.
Alex Stumpf
But what made Brandon Lowe so important to this offense was he was the guy who was setting the pace.
Alex Stumpf
What if Reynolds could be that guy in 2027?
Alex Stumpf
Good morning and welcome to OffBeat here on North Shore Nine presented by FanDuel.
Alex Stumpf
My name is Alex Stumpf and this is a daily look at your Pittsburgh Pirates.
Alex Stumpf
I meant that with Brandon Lowe.
Alex Stumpf
I meant that with Brandon Lowe.
Alex Stumpf
He was the guy who set the pace last year.
Alex Stumpf
He really didn't have a bad month.
Alex Stumpf
In five months he hit at least five home runs and the only month that he didn't was July where he batted 313 and still had an 825 OPS.
Alex Stumpf
He was pretty consistent through and I meant that he had better months and he did have a couple rough weeks scattered in there, but his production year-round was pretty astounding.
Alex Stumpf
It didn't matter who didn't matter what external factors were going on, he found a way to contribute very consistently.
Alex Stumpf
And that's what every team searches for in this game.
Alex Stumpf
Consistent offense.
Alex Stumpf
Consistent players in general, but consistent offense.
Alex Stumpf
Guys who are the same day coming in, day in, day out.
Alex Stumpf
You don't know if they went 3 for 4 or 0 for 4.
Alex Stumpf
Those type of mindset, mentality people.
Alex Stumpf
And Bryan Reynolds, in that regard, is one of those people.
Alex Stumpf
We've never seen him get real low.
Alex Stumpf
We haven't seen him get all that real high.
Alex Stumpf
He has always been at that pretty close to baseline.
Alex Stumpf
His performance, on the other hand, he has had some highs.
Alex Stumpf
Some really high highs.
Alex Stumpf
And then he didn't do much in the second half of this year.
Alex Stumpf
And that was an issue.
Alex Stumpf
Bryan Reynolds had a 933 OPS in May and 911 OPS in June.
Alex Stumpf
878 in the first half of the season.
Alex Stumpf
He should have been an all-star, in my opinion.
Alex Stumpf
14 home runs, 59 RBI, 7 stolen bases.
Alex Stumpf
He did a lot.
Alex Stumpf
That was great.
Alex Stumpf
Second half of the season, really wasn't the same player.
Alex Stumpf
Batting average dipped from 283 to 229.
Alex Stumpf
OBP from 400 to 312.
Alex Stumpf
Slugging, 477 to 347.
Alex Stumpf
878 OPS in the first half of the year.
Alex Stumpf
659 in the second half.
Alex Stumpf
14 home runs the first half of the year.
Alex Stumpf
3 in the second half.
Alex Stumpf
And just 13 runs batted in 64 games played.
Alex Stumpf
Now there's data out there that claims that the weather impacted him more than any other hitter this past year for home run power.
Alex Stumpf
And I, who am I to argue with a, with a claim on Twitter that doesn't have tangible data behind it.
Alex Stumpf
But I will take it at face value.
Alex Stumpf
And he is someone who, we're always going to see some long fly balls.
Alex Stumpf
Sometimes they turn into home runs.
Alex Stumpf
Sometimes they turn into doubles.
Alex Stumpf
He hit 40 doubles this year.
Alex Stumpf
Some years, flip of the coin, that turns into like 35, low 30 doubles and he hits five or 10 more homers.
Alex Stumpf
So, I'm not necessarily ripping on that, but it is a trend with him that he generally peaks in the first half of the season.
Alex Stumpf
He generally peaks in June.
Alex Stumpf
This, he had a really good finish to 2025, but that came at the cost of him not having a good first half of 2025.
Alex Stumpf
And in the second half of this year, look, I'm not going to throw a whole lot of the Pirates' July swoon at his feet.
Alex Stumpf
I think there were multiple factors in play.
Alex Stumpf
The injuries not being aggressive enough to add to the bullpen until literally deadline day.
Alex Stumpf
But his fall off in the second half is part of it.
Alex Stumpf
He's someone who was hitting at an all-star pace and then drove in 13 runs in 64 games from there on out.
Alex Stumpf
And he was playing in the heart of the order.
Alex Stumpf
Yeah, maybe the weather played a factor in it, but we have seen in the past him, A, fall off in the second half of the season.
Alex Stumpf
He had a 719 OPS in 2024, the last time he was at all-star.
Alex Stumpf
719 OPS the rest of the way after the all-star game.
Alex Stumpf
But there's also another question mark with him of whenever he was really cooking in May and June, that was the deepest lineup he had been a part of with the Pirates.
Alex Stumpf
Pitchers couldn't pitch around him.
Alex Stumpf
They had to pitch him because who do you want to go to?
Alex Stumpf
Do you want to go to O'Hearn?
Alex Stumpf
Do you want to go to Brandon Lowe?
Alex Stumpf
He didn't have a lot of protection come July and August because O'Hearn was on the injured list.
I think that does play a factor, that whenever the offense really needs him to step up, if guys go down without that protection, he hasn't been able to match the same level of production.
Alex Stumpf
One of the things that made Brandon Lowe so valuable was that consistency that he brought in every day.
What if he could do, maybe he doesn't have, the high 900s OPS in a month in May and June, but he's more of the consistent, steady force.
Alex Stumpf
It turns in low 800 OPS month in and month out.
Alex Stumpf
We're going to take a quick break because I'd like to thank today's sponsor, Larenco.
Alex Stumpf
We all know nicotine pouches are popular, and part of it isn't so much the nicotine as it is the routine.
Alex Stumpf
Laren just launched a pouch that keeps the routine but leaves the nicotine out.
Alex Stumpf
Larenco pouches swap out the nicotine and give you clean focus and support your enamel the whole time they're in.
Alex Stumpf
Just tuck one in and go about your day.
Alex Stumpf
Each pouch has a half cup of coffee's worth of caffeine, plus L-theanine and alpha-GPC for a smooth, steady focus with no energy crash.
Alex Stumpf
It gives your teeth daily enamel support in between brushings and comes in mint, cinnamon, and mango, and it's nicotine-free always.
Alex Stumpf
It's doing something good for your teeth, and it gives you smooth energy and focus without those jitters.
Alex Stumpf
Every other pouch out there makes you pick between something that helps you focus and something that's actually good for your teeth.
Alex Stumpf
This is the only one designed to do both, and it comes from a brand that's leading the way at supporting your oral health.
Alex Stumpf
Give Laren a try.
Alex Stumpf
Right now, Larenco is offering our listeners up to 50% off at ByLaren.com slash North Shore.
Alex Stumpf
That's ByLaren, L-A-R-I-N-E dot com slash North Shore for up to 50% off.
Alex Stumpf
Now, this is a thought exercise with Reynolds because I don't know what the magic formula is for getting him to be the same guy in April and in June and in September and ideally October.
Alex Stumpf
I don't have a lot of insight on what exactly makes him click in that way, but I think that would be extremely beneficial to this lineup that does have some boom or bust variants, I fear, going into next year.
Alex Stumpf
Esmerlyn Valdez played really well in 2026, he deserves to go into 2027 expecting a good chunk of playing time.
Alex Stumpf
He should be part of their plans.
Alex Stumpf
In my opinion, he is my opening day right fielder.
Alex Stumpf
He also had some real feast or famine months.
Alex Stumpf
He found ways to draw walks, get on base, but like if he's not hitting homers, if he's not driving extra base hits, the OPS really does crater fast.
Alex Stumpf
You can have those type of hitters in the lineup if you have the steady forces.
Alex Stumpf
Konnor Griffin, I think, really did a lot of improving as the year went on, but, the injuries, it was, they defined his year.
Alex Stumpf
Where we saw him for effectively half of the season, and I liked what I saw, but, I don't know.
Alex Stumpf
There's still, until you've played a full year, and you've hit a full year, it's always going to be a question mark.
Alex Stumpf
Nick Gonzales, I, at this very moment, I have him penciled in to slide over back to second base, in the event that Brandon Lowe does leave.
Alex Stumpf
And I guess I'd put either Jacob Gonzalez or Jared Triolo at third base, but I'm very much looking to acquire an infielder.
Alex Stumpf
There's variance, there's risk with them, too.
Alex Stumpf
Spencer Horwitz, we saw him have a bad starter 2025 and really good finish, and then in 2026, he had a really good, strong start in the first half, and then wasn't the same guy in the second half.
Alex Stumpf
Variance there, too.
Alex Stumpf
Really, the only guys looking at this lineup, I see the potential of a really good lineup here, but the only two guys that I feel like, yeah, I know what to expect from them in 2027 are Reynolds and O'Hearn.
Yeah, O'Neal, too, I think would be a good hitter.
Alex Stumpf
But even then, he didn't have a good 2025.
Alex Stumpf
You need those steady forces in the lineup.
Alex Stumpf
That's why the Pirates signed him to that $100 million deal.
Alex Stumpf
It was because they knew they needed someone steady here.
Alex Stumpf
That's what they wanted to buy with him.
Alex Stumpf
They liked the person, they liked the player, and they needed just that stalwart.
Alex Stumpf
They needed that guy to be the stud in the middle of the lineup for years to come.
Alex Stumpf
And this is a team that finally has a winning record.
Alex Stumpf
That is not too far from the postseason on paper.
Alex Stumpf
But they are going to be losing their top performer this year.
Alex Stumpf
And I don't know how they replace him with a player who is going to match that same level of production.
Alex Stumpf
That means you need to get production elsewhere.
Alex Stumpf
And yeah, that could mean home runs.
Alex Stumpf
That could mean RBI.
Alex Stumpf
That could mean war.
Alex Stumpf
But it also means consistency.
Alex Stumpf
And Reynolds has, in my opinion, the capacity to be that consistent hitter.
Alex Stumpf
Who, whenever we look at the end of the year, at his month-by-month splits, you just see 280 batting average, 270, 290, 282, 276.
Alex Stumpf
Like, something like that.
Alex Stumpf
You're allowed to have slumps.
Alex Stumpf
You're allowed to have 0 for 5 days, of course.
Alex Stumpf
But whenever your OPS is over 200 points lower in the second half of the season, you can understand why this offense wasn't as good in the second half of the year.
Alex Stumpf
Bryan Reynolds is one of this franchise's most important players.
Alex Stumpf
He could be one of their top hitters.
Alex Stumpf
And the Pirates really need him to be that guy in 2027.
Alex Stumpf
And that in all of 2027.
