With Anthony DiNardo and Jim Rosati.
Chapters
Key takeaways
1
Christian Tortosa, a 27-year-old lefty sitting 93-95 with a slider, was the Pirates' best arm of the day with a three-pitch bases-loaded strikeout and a scoreless eighth, but he's a free agent five days after the World Series, so the Pirates are essentially showcasing him for everyone else.
2
Brandon Cain, newly converted to pitching, had the worst outing of the trip: home run to Jett Williams, exit velocities of 95-103 on balls in play, and control that was all over the place despite 93-95 velocity.
3
Easton Carmichael was right on both ABS challenges the umpire refused to give him, and the system is confusing because a catcher can't throw to a base and tap his helmet at the same time.
4
Carmichael looks like a real catcher: athletic, smooth, a good framer, and 1-for-2 throwing out runners, even though he went 0-for-3 at the plate.
5
Yanni Severino has looked good all trip, picking up two hits including the walk-off in the eighth, and says he feels comfortable in the box right now.
Yo, welcome to the North Shore Nine Podcast presented by FanDuel. Of course, I'm Anthony DiNardo. With me, we've got Jim. We're here live in Glendale. This is our third game we watched in our trip out here. And Jim, when we came here, Glendale had three wins, 3-11. We're now there 5-12.
Yeah, how about that? We're their good luck charm, right? We're 2-1 with us in attendance.
That's right.
Not only is our third Glendale game while we're out here, but we watched three games today. So we're out here at Camelback Ranch in Glendale. It's a cool thing that they do here on Saturdays during the Fall League is they'll do triple headers. They'll pick a stadium and they'll play three games. All six teams will come here. So, yeah, we've been at the ballpark since like 12.30. It is now 9.30.
So it's been a nine-hour day for us. We've watched 22 innings of baseball because they're seven-inning games, but the Desert Dogs won in extras today. So, yeah, 22 innings.
I'm sorry, did you say extras? And who walked that off?
Extras, walk-off, Yanni Severino, his second hit of the day. He's looked pretty good since we've been out here. We only got to see him for six innings on the first day. And then today, he picks up two more hits. He was starting at third base today.
But, yeah, big spot there in the extra inning, which was the eighth inning. But two guys were on base, nobody out. He got a pitch to handle, hit it to left field. Got a chance to talk to him a little bit after the game. He said he feels like he's in a really good spot right now.
He feels comfortable in the box. And really, with that hit, just was trying to find something he could handle and drive. And he hit it, line drive to left field to, yeah, walk things off.
They went crazy. He got water buckets thrown all over him. So, yeah, it was a fun ending to the day.
Yeah, it really was. This game didn't have a whole lot going on now. Wyatt Stanford, we saw already the last game, was in the lineup today.
Severino was in the lineup. Carmichael was in the lineup. We talked about the two hits, right, Severino had. Carmichael was over three.
Contacted all of them, nothing too hard hit. Of course, he didn't strike out, made contact.
He looked up on a plate. We'll talk about him some. But we did finally get to see some Pirates pitchers today also.
Brandon Cain and Christian Tortosa. Right.
And Cain pitched in, let's see, Cain pitched an inning, an inning. Got hit pretty hard. Gave up four hits. Three runs. Two of those were earned.
Defense didn't really help him out at all. But he was there. Defense doesn't help anybody out.
Yeah, defense didn't help him out. But, yeah, he was getting hit pretty hard in his one inning of work.
But Tortosa came on in a really big spot in the seventh inning with the bases loaded.
Bases loaded. Two outs.
Against the lefty. Two outs. And picked up a huge strikeout on three pitches.
Basketball, slider.
Yeah, so that sent the game to the bottom half of the seventh. Glendale wasn't able to score then.
Goes to extra innings. We've got the ghost runner on second.
And Tortosa comes back out for the eighth and pitches a scoreless eighth.
It was it was a pretty impressive performance by Tortosa today.
Yeah. I didn't know much about him coming into this, to be honest, and looking things up just while he was on the mound.
He's a 27-year-old lefty, minor league free agent signing in the middle of the year.
He's actually due to be a free agent at the end of this season, which is five days after the World Series is over, which at the rate the Brewers are going, that could be Wednesday. Right.
So, like, I don't know what's going to happen here. Like, he's on track to be a free agent by, like, next week.
Yeah.
So, like, I don't know how that'll work out. But, yeah, he looked good.
lefty reliever, 93-95 on the fastball. Had a slider. Was around the zone today, at least.
And, yeah, pitched a really big inning and a third. Came away with a win.
Right. Yeah. Like I said, I don't really understand either unless it's, like, doing him a solid.
Because, again, you're essentially showcasing him to everybody right now.
And he's not going to be part of your organization unless, you have some attempts to bring him back and that's going to be done.
I don't know. I don't know.
I have no idea.
Yeah.
He looked pretty good tonight.
Yeah.
And this, again, like, he has stuff.
Yeah.
Right now the control is the issue. Today it wasn't an issue for him.
But, yeah, going back to Brandon Kane, like you mentioned, he came in.
The other thing about him, I was like, there's interest in him.
We talked to Eric Long at Hanging beforehand. that'll be out next week as well.
as you mentioned, there's some intrigue with him.
He's new. Like, you interviewed him, right?
Like, he's just converted to being a pitcher.
He was seeing, like, 93-95.
But, he was facing...
It was a pretty good lineup.
It was Jet Williams and Zier.
Like, the two guys in this lineup that are the top prospects.
Really good.
The good guys.
Like, it was like, okay, here's the situation.
Like, all right, let's see what Kane has.
Immediately home run to Jet Williams.
Yeah.
He was getting hit pretty hard, even with the ones that were made out.
it was, like, 95-103-89.
I don't know, like, a hundred mile.
Like, he was getting hit pretty hard.
But, yeah, he was sitting, like, 93-95 fastball, 83-86 for the slider.
Talk about control.
He was all over the place today, too, with that.
Yeah.
Not the best outing for Brandon Kane.
I think we can all agree on that one.
But his battery mate.
I know you wanted to talk a little bit about Easton Carmichael today.
So, again, he went 0-3 today.
He made, contact three times.
He didn't strike out any sense.
But, like, behind the plate, I want to talk about him because, one of the things, we didn't know he's athletic.
He's sitting behind the plate.
he seemed athletic.
But he went 1-2 today in throwing guys out.
Yep.
Showed off the arm.
The second, the second one he didn't make, it was, a little bit thrown, a little bit of a bounce there.
But he talked about, when we talked to him, to get to know, his main thing coming in here was the ABS challenge, right?
Like, get more accustomed to that.
Then it was funny because he attempted to challenge twice, Jim.
One time, the first time, he got the ball, popped up, didn't throw it.
There was a runner on third.
So, he like, faked the throw.
Right.
Looked to third.
Actually, yeah, good call.
He just pumped it, went to third, nothing happened, and then he challenged it.
And the ump said, well, it's too late, bro.
Yeah, didn't give it to him.
We're not going to give that to you.
And it was funny because there was dialogue going on, like, immediately after that, and then after the out was made, he even talked to the ump.
I couldn't hear what they're talking about.
But then later on as well, he, that's when he did gun the one dude out, he challenged it.
And the ump, once again, was like, no, you're not getting that.
And, like, it's just so funny to me because, again, like, his thing coming in here was, getting more comfortable with the ABS system, and now I think he's more confused than ever.
Yeah, I, it was confusing to me, too, watching, because it's like, how quick do you want them to challenge it?
Like, they're making a, like, he's immediately popping up and making a throw.
Right.
He can't simultaneously throw the ball to attempt to get an attempting base stealer and tap his helmet at the same time.
He's got to do one of the two, right?
So he was making the play, and then as soon as the play was over, he was asking for the challenge, and the umpire wasn't, didn't give it to him either time.
No, granted, this is the same umpire that threw someone out in the AFL game.
There was a guy thrown out today, yeah.
That doesn't happen often.
No, but, yeah, so again, now the thing about that, too, though, is when you looked at both challenges that he wanted to challenge that were called balls, they both were strikes.
Yeah, he would have won both.
He would have nailed both of them.
Yeah.
So, I don't know if you're listening, but Easton, you did a good job there.
You were correct.
Yeah.
But, yeah, that, again, a little bit, again, you can't talk too much about this game.
There's a whole lot going on, but defensively with Easton, one for two, throwing guys out.
The challenge system, was something I was interested in, and, again, he would have went two for two in challenges if he was great at them.
Yeah, and, just looking at him back there behind the plate, he looks like a catcher.
He's smooth back there, good framer.
There was a called strike three on a pitch with Kane pitching, and it was inside, and he did a good job of framing it, and I think the other team was out of challenges at that point.
So, yeah, he got the call.
So, yeah, he looks good back there behind the plate.
Yeah, he did.
Outside of that, I don't think there was much more that really happened to talk about.
Yeah, this is it for us.
So, we came here.
We saw five baseball games.
We saw Glendale win two out of three.
That's right.
Today was a fun day.
we talked to Sam Dykstra from MLB Pipeline, so that episode will be out next week.
We talked to Eric Longenhagen from FanGraphs.
That episode will be out next week.
So, yeah, so while we were here watching some baseball, got to talk to some other people around the industry to see what the thoughts are on our Pirates prospects.
And then we talked about guys who are here.
We talked about guys who aren't here.
So, yeah, make sure you check that out when they come out next week.
Yeah, not only that, but, Alex Dump was out here with us as well.
